I shortened the back stay by buying a length of 4mm dyneema rope and splicing it. Stronger than the wire original and better suited to a trailer sailer when dropping the mast.
I can see no advantage of using wire.

Re: Tacking in high winds
This 26M is my first sail boat and the only boat I have ever sailed period. Had it only a few months and having a great deal of fun and learning along the way as well. Last week on the lake I sail, the winds were steady at 22 knots gusting into the low 30's. As much fun as it was, I could not get t...

Re: Running Rigging Set Up
Are you still running the pointless 1 to 1 on the backstay? I find no matter how hard I try I cant seem to get any bend in the mast, I was thinking 4 to 1 would be far better, I mean whats the point in having a running backstay if you cant get enough leverage on it to impart mast bend No. I have a ...

Running Rigging Set Up
Hi have been experimenting with the running rigging and am pleased with my current set up: 1) Spiniker halyard used as safety forestay 2) Jib sheets back to cockpit track with cam cleat on track. I have not used the winch since this was done in wind speeds up to 15mph and seems to sail better than u...

Re: Reefing idea
Yes, one line back to the cockpit are deck level instead of the two for a standard one line reeling double reef system.
I only have one spare rope clutch and set of deck blocks. I was trying to avoid fitting more to accommodate the two lines.

Reefing idea
All my lines run back to the cockpit on my 26x. Other than anchoring ( which I am still thinking about) the only time I have to go forward is to reef. The boat has a conventional mast hook and two reefing cringles in the sail. I have to loosen the halyard, go forward and hook the reef at the mast an...

Re: Dutchman boom brake for an X
I use a climbing figure of eight like the picture. Works well and cost $10.
Line from the stantion base to the boom to stantion base block and back to spare locking cleat by the winch.

Re: 26x Modifications
Update on mods done -Becket / cam cleat on cockpit track to allow Genoa/Jib sheet handling from steering position ( when winch is not needed) - great mod. Almost never need the winchs and tacking can be done without leaving the helm position. Cost £30 on eBay - longer (40m) 8mm braid spiniker halyar...

Jeff
Not tried the bilge but 3m sounds like a good idea.
Good to here that they are available in the US.

Great cheap mod
At a local building supplies company in the UK I bought this product: http://www.screwfix.com/p/2-way-adhesive-base-natural-25-x-25mm-pack-of-100/38890 https://s3.postimg.org/bpk5cl273/image.jpg Basically it is a self adhesive bracket that allows cable ties to be looped through it. About $5 for 100 ...

Re: Easy release spreaders
Thanks to this forum I use wire lock pins for the spreaders and boom goose neck. When trailering I disconnect the spreaders and cable tie them to the mast. I use the same wire lock pins to lock the rudders in the upright position. This has saved me 15 minutes on set up/down. Just a word on cable tie...

Re: Mooring / Docking single handed
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMsyxnryt-s check these out- a bit similar- but do a bit more too! Looks even better, about twice the cost but would probably have bought one if I had seen it first. Twice as much? I paid $15 for my extendable boat hook. This is $150. Way cool though. Twice as much a...

Re: Mooring single handed
Are you mooring, or are you going to be docking? If you are going to be mooring, this may help more than a boat hook? http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m302/amigamanhalevy/95546F-p.jpg You just reach down, grab it, and pull aboard. The rod sticks up far enough for you to just reach over and grab i...

Mooring / Docking single handed
The single most difficult aspect of getting to know my new :macx: for me has been coming alongside and mooring/docking the boat when single handed or with my wife (same as single handed at the moment). I have been caught out by winds pushing the boat off the jetty or bouy a number of times, last wee...
