Kelly, everyone on the board that said fuel starvation was the culprit should take a bow! I know I appreciated all the help and support. You guys are a tremendous resource. Free drinks for all someday.
Am sleeping like a log now.

Tohatsu 50D running problems - Small miracle - IT'S FIXED!!!
After all the trials and tribulations the motor is purring like brand new! There were multiple problems, all dealing with fuel fittings and line leaks, bad fuel pump (maybe caused by air getting into the lines), 2 carburetors which had plugged up jetting systems in the weird mid-range jets and just ...

50D running problems
Don T: Thanks for the suggestions, raining today so tomorrow will try to methodically and logically try some of them. Thanks to all for their suggestions. I'm sure we're missing something in our approach. I guess we've been around the problem too long that we're going around in circles....who knows?...

Tohatsu 50D running problems
Gentlemen: Thanks for the inputs, all of them. At this point we'll continue to see what else we can try. I think the intake manifold leak may have some merit although with new gastet there it shouldn't be a problem.....I think. The overheat suggestion is interesting although after running on and off...

Tohatsu 50D Update (unnecessary)
I wanted to call attention to the update I just posted tonight Tuesday May 13, 2008. Go to page 2 for update. Thanks. Henry, This is a NON-critical advisory ... please don't be offended. Please recognize that it's NOT necessary to create a "NEW THREAD" in order to bring attention to a NEW POST. This...

50D problems- Updated on 5/13/08
UPDATING @ May 13th The Tohatsu mechanic got the carb parts in and did all 3 carbs and checked everything. Also replaced the hose going from the inlet for the gas and the hose going from the outlet on the fuel filter to the juction where it's mixed. Checked spark on all plugs and guess what? STILL ...

50D continuing problems
Gentlemen: Thank you for all the inputs. The Tohatsu mechanic ordered new kits for the carbs. The mechanic who did the initial cleaning did not install kits. Kits are in today, Monday May 12. Kits are to be put in today and will try again tomorrow afternoon. Tohatsu says the problem is not electrica...

Tohatsu 50D - Problem not fixed yet
I wanted to make sure this got read so I started a new thread. The parts for the fuel pump and the new fuel filter came in and were installed. Backed the boat back into the water and it idled perfectly, put it under load (prop in the water) and it died....sooner than before. When the Tohatsu mechani...

Tohatsu 50D - Fuel Starvation Confirmed
FUEL STARVATION APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN THE CORRECT ANALYSIS. Well, a Tohatsu mechanic isolated the problem to the following: a) A bad, leaking, fuel pump gasket. The mechanic who did the carbs rework MAY have opened that little jewel and then closed it up since he wasn't supposed to be doing the fuel ...

Tohatsu 50D - Fuel Starvation - Don T.
Hello, A few thoughts: 1. There was a problem on some engines where the temp overheat sensor malfuntions and kills every other spark to the plugs. 2. The trick to getting it to idle properly is adjusting the carb sync, mixture and spark advance linkage to the factory spec. This is tricky and most r...

Tohatsu 50D - Fuel starvation
I had atank where the valve only opened a bit, thats why I suggested the valve. Out of curiosity did you ever run it up to nearly full throttle when on dry land. I ask to try to define the problem better. Is it the high RPM or the load causing the problem? If the carbs were done by someone else, ma...

The valve on the fuel tank is open. In fact I switched tanks and the same thing happened. Please read my responses to Frank and Craig. Thanks.Trouts Dream wrote:Is the valve on the fuel tank all the way open?

Craig LaForce - Fuel starvation
The top of the new fuel tank fitting might have an air leak. There is a small fuel filter on the engine itself that you might also check. Does it quit totally or just slow down? The overheat sensor on the motor was defective on a bunch of them and dropped it to the slow setting when loaded a bit. I...

Frank C - Fuel Starvation
I see that you have replaced your fuel line and fuel tank. Seems you've covered some key sources of fuel starvation, but the fuel pump can be sucking air (instead of pure liquid gasoline), thru hose clamps, primer bulb, brass QR fittings, etc. (The brass fittings include rubber o-rings that can fai...

Tohatsu 50D - Running Problems
I need help, please. I have a 50D engine that I had the carbs done on. Once they were done it seemed to work fine but hadn't taken it out on the water thus putting a load on the engine. Did that today and it conked out and would not stay running. For the record, it has new plugs, gas filter, fuel li...
