It appears there is a camcleat with fairlead missing from the wooden rectangle. http://brent-rehmel....

Help with fixing a 1980 Explorer Yacht 20' Sloop
I'm thinking that it can't be a Southcoast boat; it says Southcoast on the registration. I checked the Hull ID Number and the first three letters are TSA. When I check this I get this: http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_detail.aspx?id=TSA Company: EXPLORER YACHT INC City: OLDSMAR State: FL In Bu...

I'm not sure what I can say about your propane fireplace. You can get a CO alarm at home improvement stores and even places like Walmart and Kmart. But, CO2 and CO are both odorless so that can't be causing a stink. I believe most propane and natural gas sources are tagged with an odorant (like rott...

This is a subject that is typically full of inaccuracies, biases, and strong opinions. While these are often based on real instances, unfortunately, these are seldom correct for any particular case. I'm sure we've all heard about people dying of carbon monoxide poisoning because of improperly vented...

I know the larger Macgregors use a lifting winch to raise the mast. But I'm assuming that people don't do this with the smaller Macgregor/Venture 19, 21, 23s. The mast is about 22' high. I'm probably just doing it the wrong way. I can easily push the mast up from the cockpit but then comes the acrob...

Help with fixing a 1980 SouthCoast Explorer 20' Sloop
Recently, I saw an ad for a very nice Macgregor 26X and I thought several times about going to the bank for a cashiers check and buying it. And, I talked to Bill about getting a new Macgregor 26M. I have the money, but, I have another problem. While my wife was still alive I saw an ad for a sailboat...

On sailing to Hawaii
I'll repeat this again because it seems to get overlooked no matter how many times I say it. I've seen accounts of trips to Hawaii in boats like the Potter 19 and Merit 25. I've seen far less likely trips in kayaks and rowboats. Roughly speaking, it seems to me that if a WW Potter 19 can make it the...

I guess if I mentioned some of the mods I've been thinking about then you'd really think I was nuts. The only mod I'm certain I'll get is a marine toilet with holding tank instead of the porta-potti. Beyond this I think a 40E watermaker would be good for an ocean trip. However, this would require an...

Well, let's see. I asked about this gem from rec.boats faq If you are considering a Mac26, you should also look at the Catalina 22. Compare the solidity of the structures, the hardware, the rigging That got quite a laugh. However, he didn't mind comparing the 26 with the Hunter 260 and Catalina 250....

Re: a little more insight.,,,
Brent, For several years now, I have watched this argument come up and up and up.......et cetera I don't see any reason to have a big argument over this topic. You obviously don't feel that a mac 26 is up to an extended ocean cruise and you have direct experience. Understood. For me, this topic is ...

* You've never yet even seen a Mac 26X? Correct, I've never seen a MacGregor 26 in person. * You need to buy it in Indiana and then get it the West Coast. Not exactly, I need to sail the boat near where I live, Indiana. I assume I would buy one at the nearest dealer. * This dictates a trailerable a...

I've camped in a 30' travel trailer, in the back of a stock van, and in a tent. You would need something like a 36' Catalina to have the comforts of a 30' TT, however, the 26 would be better than a stock van or tent. In terms of comfort, a 26 would be roughly equivalent to a pop-up. A storm wouldn't...
