Re: Fatal San Diego Capsize
I'm well aware of the original threads. I don't believe that anyone has posted any news regarding the official San Diego Harbor Police report. The incident created quite a stir, locally, with some persons claiming the the MacGregor sailboat design was/is unsafe. I believe that the official report di...

Fatal San Diego Capsize
I don't believe I ever saw a posting regarding an update to the capsizing of a 1988 MacGregor sailboat, (26D?), that occurred on March 28, 2011 in San Diego Bay. Two passengers were killed in the mishap. Its a bit old, but, the San Diego Harbor Police did publish the results of their investigation o...

Re: Mac mod to dive to 1000ft
When I saw the title of this thread I thought it must be a joke. After reading about it, and seeing the pictures, it gets my vote for the greatest MacGregor Mod. I hope you have a terrific success with your new boat. Please keep us advised about your assignments, as I think this is all very interest...

Re: Teak and holly flooring report
Many thanks for your candid assessment.
I hope it turns out well, even though you've had to put a lot more time into this project than you expected.

How Its Made: Evinrude E-TEC
I saw this short video on The Science Channel the other day. It features the assembly of a six cylinder, 150 HP, Evinrude E-TEC outboard motor.
I'm surprised by the amount of handwork that is involved in the process.

Re: LAIKA survived Irene, with battle scars!
Please accept my condolences regarding the damage to your boat. And, I'm glad that you've chosen to share your experiences. On the bright side: I've seen several photos of small, and large, boats that were totally destroyed by Irene. It appears that yours can be repaired and back on the water in a s...

Re: Replacing Water Ballast Valve
I would think that replacing the ballast gate assembly would be quite easy if the ballast is empty and the boat is on its trailer.
I would also think that the job would be nearly impossible if the boat is in the water because the gap between the valve assembly and the hull needs to be caulked/sealed.

Re: Battens Keep Flying Out
I had the same problem until I used sail repair tape to seal the open end of each of the mainsail's batten slots. It was an easy fix. The battens now stay in place.

Re: Fitting roller reefing main system to standard boom
Do you have only a bunch of parts? I own a prototype system. I believe its very similar to Mike's current design. If you could arrange to bring your boom and the parts to Riverside, (70 miles), I'm sure we could figure out how to put it all together. I don't have detailed photos. I believe the compl...

Re: Terrorized by Gusts!
I've found that it is easier to let out additional sail, if winds are lighter than predicted, than to take them in when conditions are a bit rough. So, I think the time to consider how much sail is appropriate, (if possible), is at the dock. Of course, if heeling becomes a problem during gusty winds...

Re: Lake Chelan cruise
My nephew and his wife own a cabin on Lake Chelan. Otherwise, they live near Everett, (Granite Falls). They escape from the Puget Sound gloom to the sunny skies of Lake Chelan as often as they can. He keeps asking me to bring our boat up to cruise the lake. Thanks for the information.

Floating VHF Radio Saves The Day!
Three fishermen were on board a 20-foot fishing boat out of Woods Hole, Mass. on Saturday, August 6, 2011. At about 2:00 P.M., the boat started to sink in 120 feet of water. They put on life jackets and jumped into the water. "luckily, one of the handheld radios had seperated from the boat and ...

Re: Estimating true wind speed from apparent
Dave, If you want to estimate the wind speed out on the water while you're at the dock, you may want to look around for flags to see what they are doing. Also, check the trees. It usually takes a pretty stiff wind to make a flag stretch out horizontally. I am usually more concerned with how rough th...

Re: "Liquid Rollers" Perhaps a warning
Want to make your boat go faster??
I haven't tried this product, but the America's Cup racers can't all be wrong. I wonder how expensive it is and how hard it is to apply. Maybe it can turn a Mac into a super speedboat!
