You think they would like to sail their little Potters to the Ishmus? I always thought it would be fun to take over Cat Harbor with a bunch of little boats like ours and park right inside of ballast point just to make all the other keelboats crazy. 8) I know I would do it in a new york minute.

Sure is a pretty place. And empty inside the cove, too.

I'd join you, but it's a bit of a drive. Then a bit of a sail. I don't think the admiral will go for it. :P

Given the depth at (presumably) mean low tide, which I assume is shown in feet on this chart, I can see why nobody is in there. Pull up the boards, motor in, drop the hook, enjoy some time on the bottom in a private cove . . . what could be better than that? Other than maybe a little schadenfreude when other sailboats try to follow.

Now I feel a little bad just thinking about it. :|

 :D

Not Me!! That's the best part of sailing!! Nothing better than finding a place that is dry at low tide! ESPECIALLY if your in an X boat cuz the bottom is flat! In the Sea of Cortez we would anchor over a half mile out at high tide and at low tide we would WALK INTO SHORE!

It was great!

I would probably walk 'boat' into Ballast Point - it's great - the only thing is that you need to shuffle your feet because there are sand sharks there in the shallows.

I downloaded the charts for Catalina Island to my Offshore Navigator software, and the larger chart shows soundings in fathoms, so it's not that terribly shallow, at least in the middle. 1/4 fath at low tide is plenty for our shallow boats. :D

Not real happy about the sharks, though. :|

You don't need to worry about those sharks - they are sand sharks and they are only mean if you pick them up by their tails - I have a picture of someone grabbing one by the tail in the shallows over at the other end of this very bay - they thrash about but no biting. I'm the biggest fraidy cat when it comes to animals and these guys don't scare me so you should be just fine.

The best way to enter these little inlets is in reverse at idle looking right over the motor into the water - the water is so clean and clear at Catalina you can see down near 30 feet. When it gets shallow enough you just cut the motor and raise it out of the water and step into the water behind the boat and walk it in the rest of the way by grabbing hold of the outboard - I have done it many times before in many places. Don't even worry if the boat goes sideways - in the shallows it's easy to just pull on the outboard and yank it back.

The Admiral and I have sailed several times with the SoCal Potters. We wanted to go to Chula Vista but that didn't work out for us. We may be joining them for either the Catalina trip or the Brew Fest this year but that remains to be seen.

Down here in Aus we dont have issues with the trailer sailor clan very much, of course there is a few uneducated morons but in general the Mac gets reasonable support, it has taken a lot of time and PR but most are excepting of the Mac and her compromise nature, but then again all boat are compromise in some way, shape or form.

I did have a interesting conversation with a true sailing BIGOT who was telling me that a Mac wasnt a real sail boat etc. etc. and he had been on one ONCE so knew all about them, the truth came out that the issues he had were infact his lack of ability to notice what the boat was doing and change his approach.

Apparently it was the boat fault that HE stalled the rudders and the boat kept going in a straight line, what can I say apart from a poor workman blames his tools, that sort of person will never change, and just for the record his wizz bang racer / cruiser gets run over by a Mac going down wind. Several of my mates have the same type of boat and they all get nervous when a Mac is on a run behind them, because they know they are going to suffer the indignity of being overtaken

What makes a potter a real sailboat but not the Mac?? The are all basically doing the same thing, hanging out in the shallows having a great time. I looked at a 19 potter, I just wanted the hull. But in the end I decided it was still too small to live on for months. (For me)

Woukd have been an awesome little boat though.

Sounds like fun but we'll be in Oxnard sailing out of Channel Islands Harbor May 20 till May 30. Some friends and family are meeting us there. The last time we were there a couple invited us to join them for a dock party. They had food, drinks, and even a band. It was great. Join us if you can.

OTOH, Sail magazine's SAIL’s "Best Boats Nominations for 2014" clearly mention the Tatoo/Macgregor 26 - so somebody likes us. :)

Huh, that is weird :? - I dunno - must be an East Coast thing. :?: :?

It's hard to find a MAC of any kind anywhere over here in So Cal. 8)
Being somewhat west and south of ya, I can see what he means "east coast thing"...maybe a yankee northerner thang... :P

We up here on the Great Lakes refer to our neck of the woods as the North Coast, Sweat Water or Unsalted Sailing. 8)
