Very interesting, JT. Looks gorgeous. What crop is produced on the terraced landscape?

Just one note folks - you need to click "Edit HTML" if you want to post a picture - don't try to do it using plain text, it won't work.

Hi Currie

It's mostly Port Wine.

PORTO

(Also some fine red wine)

The "terraces" are made with 3mt stone walls to create terraces 3mt wide...

They are classified "World Heritage" bi UNESCO

Image

Image

They were made in the XVII and XVIII century "bi hand".

Steep inaccessible mountains were transformed into vineyards

Hundreds thousands of acres of vineyards

Only with google we can see how big was the "job"... :o

Image

The production area is along the river for 100 km long and 20-40 km wide...

Image

The wine was transported bi sailboats similar to the vikings

Our farm is small one (650 acres)

We produce a wine called Graams Port

English like it very much... 8)

All the best

Jose

José,

I see that you have 3 dams between you and the Atlantic Ocean. It looks like they have lock facilities. Have you ever motor-sailed down to Porto and sailed the Atlantic. It looks very similar to our location here in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. We can launch here in Umatilla, OR and have 3 dams with locks between us and the Pacific Ocean.

I normally sail above the the Mac Nary Dam, but I can launch below it. Bubba, School House Steve and I sail in the same areas.

There are 5 large dams (4 to the sea and one up)

I made the cruise along the river several times.

It is one of the best water way cruises in Europe...

They all have large gates for boats up to 95mt X 14mt

Water level is very stable and the difference of altitude is about 30-40mt each dam.

I have 3 dams below me, 1 right here at Hermiston, OR (McNary Dam) and many more above me. On a trip downstream to the Pacific, I have to pass the John Day Dam,

The Dalles Dam,

And the Bonnevile Dam,

Total fall from here to the Pacific is about 175 m, or 500 feet. I have made the trip once on a Santa Cruz 27 and it was a blast. Many vineyards and orchards along the way over here, also.

Hey Fellow Mac Owners,

If you have not checked out this new Macgregor Sailors Map on Google yet then you should. I was able to change the icon to the :macm: for my post. Unfortunately my icon is hard to see as it is "buried" under JCasale's anchor icon in Jacksonville, Fl...you have to zoom in to break out the two icons.

You too can use the icons from this website on Google if you so desire. Just right click and save the icon to your hard drive and then upload to photobucket (or whatever service you use). Then on Google Maps while in the "edit" mode click on the icon for your post...there will be a link to "change icon" in the upper right corner of the edit window...a new window will open for you to type the URL of the icon you wish to use...you have to link to a website...you can't cut/paste.

I also recommend, just for the sake of those of us that like to surf this map, that you add your macgregorsailors username somewhere to your post so we will know who you are if we don't know the name of your boat.

I think it is very cool that we can better see where your sailing grounds are visually. Some of you have some great looking sailing areas...I will have to add them to my list of future sailing locations.

Happy Googling,
Jim

I have also added the :macx: and the :mac19: to the list of available icons to use. I think they are always there as long as you are using the standard username as described on page 1 of this thread by Scott and Kevin.

I will keep these icons on my photobucket account so they should be available on the Google Map site for us to use all the time.

Happy Posting,
Jim

The best that I can say about our "conditioned" winds is, you had better be in condition. The winds in and around the gorge can be very unpredictable, to say the least. About 100 miles downstream from me is Hood River, OR. It is known as the:

Wind Surfing,
Image

and Kite Boarding capital of the world.
Image

That's not river current that you see, but wind chop on a nice day. Big winds keep life exciting.

That is the Freshwater Bay Y/C off to starbd.[ of the google map, not the photo] No, I am not a member...costs too much. All the $$$$ are tied up in the :macm:
