Additional How-To's

I'm going to use this thread to answer some questions as they come up about how to do certain things on the discussion board or on other parts of the website.

Inserting a URL in your post

Post by Heath » Tue Jan 13, 2004 11:00 am

There is a URL field that you can use to include a URL in your posts. To use it, click on the URL buttons above the message. Inside the 'starting' url tag, put an '=' without the quotes and then the URL. Between the starting and ending URL tag, put a small description of the link. For example, to insert a link to the MacGregorsailors.com website, the url would be inserted like this:

Code: Select all

[url=http://macgregorsailors.com]A great site[/url]

Which will end up in your post looking like:

A great site

This is the proper way of inserting URL's and will take care of the problem of long URL's causing the page to become too wide. The URL tags that I used are just one of the available BBCode tags that you can use inside your messages to enhance the way it looks.

For more information on how to use the BBCode tags, click on the BBCode link on the bottom left of the box when you go to post a message.

Why don't my bold/quote/URL/font tags show up properly?

You may have noticed while reading a thread that some people are able to change the font, color, or style of the text in their message or they are able to insert quotes, URL's or things like that while in other people's messages it doesn't seem to work properly.

For the people who can't seem to get it to work:

When you post a new message or reply to somebody's message, look below the box where you are typing your text. You will see three checkboxes: Disable BBcode in this post, Disable Smilies in this post, and Notify me when a reply is posted.

The special formatting that you can use in a message is called "BBCode". If you have the "Disable BBCode in this post" box checked, then instead of working properly to change the font or color or to insert a quote or URL, you will see the actual codes. It will appear that it "doesn't work".

All you need to do is to make sure that this box isn't checked when you post a new message. For an existing message, just cllick on the "Edit" button and uncheck the "Disable BBCode..." box and hit "Submit". If you find that you are always unchecking this box every time you submit a message, go to your profile and change "Always allow BBCode" to Yes.

The "Disable Smilies in this post" box performs a similar function to the "Disable BBCode..". So why would you ever want to disable these things? It depends on what you're trying to post. If you're trying to write a message that needs to use some characters that keep getting incorrectly interpreted as BBCode or a Smiley, then simply check the appropriate box and the board will quit mangling your text.
