Best/better boat waxes?

Post by dlandersson » Wed Mar 19, 2014 1:47 pm

As I start to get myself in gear - season opens 1 April, anyone have any thoughts on a good hull wax (I like something with a good "band for the buck" otherwise I'd get "Hull Kote". 8) I tend to use an orbital polisher (it was on sale at Wal-Mart). 8)

Good question and I'm envious that you can even think about this now.

I bought some of that Collinite Fleet wax. Waiting for an opportunity to remove the cover and use it.

I use liquid Turtle Wax, or Nu Finish liquid wax. They work fine enough for me. I don't need to work any harder than I have too, and Nice Aft continues to get compliments year after year :!:

How many times per year is everyone waxing with their preferred wax?

Hey Quebec1,

Your hull looks amazing!

We use the same product on our 2000-X.

What is the difference between the #920 and #870 cleaners and which one do you use?
Also which wax are you using, solid or paste!

Thanks!
Darry

I second the question...and WOW on your hull...I had to be very disciplined not to buy a blue/black hull in South Florida (hot)...but WOW!!...nice hull!

Once.

Not to take away from Bertrand's beautiful blue hull, and it is a beauty, but with the proper preparation, you can have the same results with a liquid wax. If you stand at an acute angle, as in the photograph, you can have the most impressive reflection.

If you go to the site that Russ posted, you can read that many do use, and are happy with a liquid wax. they are very effective, and easy to use.
I generally stick with the Collinite 885 paste wax. Contributing editor Frank Lanier, who waxed his hull by hand, found it too much work and was quite happy with the Collinite. A number of readers swear by the Nu Finish.
More time for saiing ~~_/)~~ Of course, if that sort of labor is a work of love for you, by all means, have that affair with your boat 8) :D

I also use the Collinite Pre cleaner and the paste wax for the best long term results, by far, IMHO.
Multiple, multiple coats of precleaner for the #$%7*#$@ blacks, followed with several coats of paste for the #$%7*#$@ blacks.
White hull twice a year, if it needs it or not. The white hull is a relative piece of cake, just a lot of it.
#$%7*#$@ blacks, at least four times a year, for sure, if it needs it or not.

Never let the blacks go downhill the in the first place and your work will be greatly reduced over the long term.
Don't wait until it looks like it needs to be waxed. It does, and will reward you with a shine for many years.

My boat is fully exposed with no cover on the trailer 24/7/365 in So Cal sunshine.
!0" orbital for the white hull and a 5" orbital for the blacks, changing the bonnets often. Very often.

Bite the bullet, it's hard work to keep the boat looking factory nice, but oh well. It's just work.

Stay away from rope and tree limbs if you have a blue hull. :( :?

They have...and I've got Meguire's Marine Wax. What was good last year may not be as good this year. I knida like Turtle Wax's "ICE" liquid waxes - they are easy to apply, look good and are UV resistant.

After reading all the different threads on this forum I just ordered some Collinite 925 and 870 from http://www.eshine.ca since these seemed to have the best overall reviews. I used the 3M marine wax in the past, which was pretty good on the whites but so-so on the blacks.

Last year I just gave up on trying to keep the black shiny. I repainted them. They now look great 8)
