Self tending jib.

Post by Ixneigh »

I figured out a way to get a self tending jib on my boat, or rather, how to set the boom up for it without much trouble. Is it worth it? I envision a smaller jib, usable down to the second reef, or all the time if your not looking for speed. I used the jib little this time out. The main was fine for coasting along at 3.5 knots in the lee of Elliot's key. The jib, if self tacking might be nice too though. I would make the boom out of carbon tubing, and fashion an end that would drop into the drive socket of my windlass.
Any thoughts?

Should work. Do you do a lot of tacking?

I like the idea.Would you run a single sheet for trimming? Is the jib on a furler now?

Should work just fine presuming the boom can clear the pulpit.

I have looked at this on my :macm: - not gotten around to it yet.
I considered this design using the mast raising points on the middle stanchions.

Might work ok with a 90% jib or a furled 110% jib. (I suspect a furled genoa will be too inefficient).

Anyway not hard to implement to give it a go as no additional rigging other than the pulleys.

The line setup is an interesting concept.
I am actually trying to fix things so that if I decide to replace my slider hatch with a fighter style canopy, I can sail the boat from inside using some method to control the rudders. Also, I do a lot of casual sailing where the object is not speed, but ease of operation and good control.
