Water leaks when it Rains

I have discovered a bad water leak only when it rains & my full enclosure is off , when the full encloseure is on no leaks so It was obvious that what ever was causing this bad leak was in the under cover area so that kinda defined the area for the most part.
When it rained hard & the full enclosure was off I would get rain water pouring in from the plugs that are right next to the cabin entrance / exit ladder top mounting bolt holes it was coming in fairly fast so I knew it was a significant leak


the water would just pour in from these plugs

So I got the garden hose out & suspecting it was my dodger mounting hardware that was the culprit I began to water down the suspected area's with the gaden hose, yep it was around that area alright soon as I put the hose on it it would leak like crazy so my first thought was to just re-seal the dodger mounting brkt holes with 5200. . But then I started thinking man thats just too much water coming for & the mounting holes are on top of the cabin sole this water had to be following a water channell so to speak so I decided to bite the bullit & pulled off the 7ft plastic strip that retainings the cabin hatch slider & this is what I found


It is a 5/8" long crack "hole" right where the hatch slides along & of couse the water follows this channell so it would just pour in side the boat

I found two more pin holes on the same side about 30" in front of the crack that where big enough to leak to cause me greif

so the fix is on will up-date later to-day weather permiting

Once I have repaired the port side I will also be remoeing the S/B side too for inspection
well @ least now I have resolved my problem I know I have one more leak @ the sterring arm where water pours in from there will fix that with a 1" inch seal like others have done

Done the velco strip mod while I was at it so all's well again I have one stearn leak @ the steering linkage arm water runs in from the 1" tube so I will install a seal their as some have done on this site
I installed butyle cauk tape under the white plastic strip that retains the siding hatch , on installing the second strip lined up all the holes started installing the screws @ the front then stopped & said to myself somethings not right here ! paused & then said Oh yes better install the sliding hatch before I go anyfurther phew that was almost a big bloomer woulda been peeved if I had to have taken that all off again LOL

Done the velco strip mod while I was at....

The velcro stip, does that help the canopy slide easier? It would at least stop the canopy fron chewing into the top of the hull. What I did on my boat was to add teflon tape, it makes the canopy slide very easy so it opens and closes smoothly with one hand. U do not want that hatch sliding to freely especaily if u have to stand on it in inclement weather !

What side of the velcro did you use? The hook or the loop? And why?
Did you just use the adhesive that came on the strip, or add extra.

I have the same job to do this fall.

With the dealer-installed dodger brackets that reduced the clearance for the sliding hatch to almost zero, I found I had no space left for the velcro that I bought. (Yes, I could always shim the hatch retaining strip for more clearance).

Great idea- I am looking for something thin like the PTFE tape that just might be thin enough to work. And since the dodger is pretty well a permanent fixture for me, the slip-sliding hatch is less of an issue.

As she sits the load is just perfect, I have never had the hatch move on its own, even in wind, rain and waves. I think they are both good ideas. For my mod there was enough room in betwwen the hatch and the rail that no other height adjustment was needed to accommodate the thickness of the tape. I purchased the material through Aircraft Spruce:

One thing you should know about the velcro. We installed it and it does make the hatch slide much better and quieter. It also raises the hatch about 1/16 inch. That 1/16th inch is enough to allow water to enter the front if you tow in the rain. After several trips we put plastic on the dinette seat and towels on the floor and stove if we expect rain. We did not have this problem before the velcro.

Rains quite a bit her in the Northwest, so far we have never got any water in the cabin - even when towing. I'll have to keep a close eye out the next time we tow in a storm.

With my dowsar dodger mounting brkts are on top of the white plastic strip that holds the sliding hatch down in this mounting possition they do not interfere or reduce the opening slider gap

Geoff "beene" bought his boat from "Bill" also I did not like the way he mounted the double clutches beside the winches more usefull in front of them also I have the wide dodger so they would not fit their either but they are a very nice feature to have on the boat

Jim, I know the 'infamous' factory winches have been discussed many times before, and true to form, mine are now both seized solid after their second year. Looking at your clutch setup it would seem if you used your winch to haul down the line(s) it would put a strong sideways force to your clutch setup.
Question is this: if I was to relocate the winches rearward to the cockpit railings, what would I likely experience in putting 2 to 4 smaller clutch/brakes (on each side) in the flat area currently occupied by the present setup.
A mounting plate, like you've done, seems prudent - but do you know if the factory bulked extra fibreglass in the under-space in order to carry the winch, that would interfere with my idea? Is this a good idea?

Boy, I'm sooo going to give your boat a once-over if we make it to Port Credit, this month!
