Hi everybody,
First, thanks to everybody for the mods and tricks you gave..
For blue water sailing( a heavy loaded :macm: ),normaly cruising about hull speed and if needed to run away from a storm ( fuel consumption is also a parameter (1 litre=3 USD) . which one do you prefer than a weak honda 50?? Evinrude E-Tec 60 or the new yamaha 70hp ?? (sorry for the poor english)

Thanks for reply,

I am not going to get into which is a better motor, but rather dwell on your statement of
and if needed to run away from a storm
You also said ,"For blue water sailing".

First, no fifty is going to outrun a storm. I know Mac owners say this, but it's not happening on the ocean. A lake maybe, but not the ocean. Second, When you are on the ocean, you can't throttle as high as you can on a lake, or a river. The swells will not allow it. If you're trying to outrun a storm on the ocean, well it's just not happening unless you consider reading the sky, and leaving early, as outrunning a storm. I would call that good sense :) The difference between a wise man and a smart man is that a smart man knows how to get out of situations which a wise man would not get into in the first place. :D

All of the motors you mention have their benefits, and their drawbacks. for example, I have the fifty, and think it's great, but I know that my fully loaded M at full throttle is only going to do about 12 knots. On the ocean, much less. As you go up in horsepower, your fuel efficiency goes dramatically down at full throttle. Be realistic with your expectations.

I went with Mercury simply because almost anywhere in the continental USA parts and service will not be a problem! Dennis

If you are buying a new one your most likely choices would be the ETEC 60 (2 stroke) or the Suzuki 70 (4 stroke). The 50s on Macgregors are the older engines.

I have an ETEC 60 and it has let me beat several storms back to the dock while day sailing on the weekends. The non-Macgregor sailboats had to ride it out.

Several on this forum have the Suzuki 70 and I thought long and hard about it. My final decision rested on not seeing a single Suzuki on the back of any of the boats down here and seeing ETECs everywhere.

Hope this helps.

I have out run storms.... I saw them coming. I dropped the sail and then the ballast and put my Mercury 50HP BIG FOOT.. ( thats the real Key, the size of the prop !) into WOT and at around 15 to 18 MPH headed for port.
BUT ... IMHO you WILL be needing slow speed directional stability ! You'll find you need that a LOT more than WOT.. You need slow speed direction and there by power for docking and maneuvering in harbors and congested and windy areas.. So No Matter which motor you chose and I too , now that they have wider coverage and availability, really like the ETEC.
I no longer see it mentioned but many used to call these boats Waterbagos.. and the name fits pretty well if you really think about it. There fore you need power to move these boats and the Big Prop does it best a slow speeds..
""The 50s on Macgregors are the older engines."" I assume this refers to the dollars store Tohotsu motors.. Mercury and Yamaha both offer Big Prop lower ends.. I bought my Mercury because it was at the time, Made In America and I am a BIG, Made in America supporter...... kind of guy...

That's a pretty good way to make these kind of decisions - - - what you see in your area is probably what you want :!:

Parts and service should be a major decision factor.
Other things being equal, I would buy the 70 just to have the extra power.

Blue water? I wouldn't take a Mac into blue water with bad weather in the forecast. Outrunning a storm is difficult in any boat.

I installed a 2009 50HP Tohatsu fuel injected, oil injected motor last year.
Fast, fast, fast.

Na This is faster 75HP Merc F/S against 60HP E-Tec no comparison , besides two strokes got no torq !

PS Ray , Beene seems to be out running the inclemnet weather pretty good I'd say !! :P

I have a couple and maybe a few question's..... 5 to start.
1. What is the WOT Speed for your 75?
2.What was the other Mac running for power, that you were racing?
3. in Video #8 who is who and what are each of you running.
4. Why do you have your Port Rudder up? Drag? Directional stability?
5. What prop are you running?

Does anyone know how far a 4 stroke motor can be heeled over while it is running?
I am thinking of motorsailing, and heeling over to maybe 30 degrees.
will the 4-strokes be able to run at this angle without sucking air in the oil-pump?

Why would you, want to ? To what benefit? Do you realize 30 degrees "almost" has the rail, in the water?

Well let's say I'm motorsailing at 15-20 degrees, and there is a gust of wind, and then a wave
rolling the boat over.
Will the motor be starved for oil ?
A two-stroke would be OK, but I'm not sure of the limit of the 4-strokes.
I don't have much sailing experience, but I think it can be an advantage to
keep some sail up in rough conditions, just to steady the boat, and reduce the rolling, even
if sails alone is not enough to make headway.

You can heel a power boat over pretty hard on sharp turns & when going up or down big swells so I would emagine that the engineers would take all that into consideration also most If not all new f/s will shut down if the computer does not sense eng oil pressure

I've done 15 degrees with my Merc 50 BF 4 stroke and never had an engine alarm...my guess is 30 degrees would be Ok too.
