Sailing/Spearfishing YouTuber To Buy MacGregor 26

Post by Adventureman Dan »

Hey, my name is Daniel. I have the YouTube channel "Adventureman Dan". I'm new to this forum, but am keen to learn more and buy a MacGregor by early spring.

I recently sold my 1984 Beneteau Idylle 11.50M to make way for my next adventure goal of buying a MacGregor 26(X or M or even Tattoo). I made a whole video about my ambitious plan: To which I'd welcome any thoughts or advice from experienced MacGregor owners.

I'd really like to connect with more MacGregor owners. Having recently spent a weekend with a Mac 26X owner up in Montreal Canada to tour his boat and talk all sorts of ideas for what I might be able to do with one amazing boats. But due to the 4' deep snow, that's about all we could do. So if you're in a place where the water is not frozen, I'd love to take a trip around the southern US to actually sail and motor one of these before I buy one. As well as connect more with those in the MacGregor community for when I soon have one of my own.

Thanks!

Hello Dan, welcome to the forum from a fellow trailer sailing neophyte! We've only owned our 26X for a bit over a year, but there's a wealth of info searching this forum back to when these were still being made and sold new.

We went down the 26X road after looking for something we could trailer 6 hours North to Lake Powell, 6 hours West to San Diego or 4 hours South to the Sea of Cortez. We flew into Salt Lake City following up on a FB marketplace ad and ended up towing it 379 miles South to Lake Powell with a rented U-haul the next day. We finally got an adventure vehicle to tow it with last May before our 1st week long stay on the lake:

They make a good canyon runner and we pretty much beach it to sleep every night!

Hey Dan, welcome aboard: it was great to host you last weekend and give you the personalized tour of Bear Hunt, in all her hastily-stored winter glory. Elizabeth previewed the tour video with me and was (jokingly) upset about how nothing was put away. There's only one way to redeem that: a Lake Champlain meetup this summer in full voyage-mode :D :D hopefully with you on your own Mac.

Glad you're on this forum, you won't find a more helpful group of MacOwners, nor a better moderated site.

Welcome Dan, I too have the similar adventures in mind for my X. Bought mine a year and a half ago. I live in the desert Southwest so I have to travel great distances to find Lakes to explore. So I look at pulling in to RV parks or campgrounds ( or Walmart parking lots) on the way there so am in the process of some mods that will make mine just as much an RV as a boat. My current project is an indoor Shower Mod (which is more feasible on an X as opposed to an M model) with hot and cold running water and a fresh water filtration system so when I get where I'm going I can simply launch the boat and start pumping lake water thru some filtering into my 20 gallon storage tank (I'm pretty sure thats about the biggest one I can slip into the forward bilge area) and then Im ready for a nice morning shower every morning. Then simply dump the water at the end of the weekend to lighten up as much as possible for trailering back home. Progress is a bit slow on the shower but I'm posting pictures Etc on this forum titled

Thank you all for the warm invite! :)

Tuxonpup thanks for the pictures and super cool to hear you're doing Baja. I'll reach out to you. Since Baja is HUGE on my list to take the MacGregor to. I used to spearfish there and it's unreal underwater! And I love the idea of beach the boat most nights.

I'm curious to hear more from people who've used their MacGregor as a RV on land. Especially what if any problems they've had?

I'm planning on a trip South(currently based out of frozen Upstate NY) to wherever it's warmer to meet up with other MacGregor owners to hopefully sail with and learn from. As well as look at MacGregors for sale and hopefully buy one. If anyone is available for that, please reach out.

Thanks everyone!

And while you’re on Lake Champlain you can visit our boat as well - Miss Tecumseh - up in Rouses Point. Happy to give you a tour and a ride. Ours is configured much differently than most Macs.

As for friendliness - that’s now in legendary status, as we’ve maintained that harmony for over 25 years now. We mods especially appreciate the spirit of the members, with their steadfast and earnest efforts to keep it that way, too.

Dan,

Mine isn’t for sale, but we will be in Bolton Landing the last two weeks in July. If you wish to meet up, get in touch.

WADR, you should get a Mac, then do a mini-loop of the Great Lakes. :)

Michigan City has a casino, zoom, outdoor mall, etc.

Chicago has a ton of stuff

Hahaha I hate how I sound on video, and the frozen lips don't help I think it was about -15C that day. I literally had to break out the heat gun to unthaw the companionway to get inside.

Winter hit early and hard this year, so the boat wasn't in a great state for storage. At least it was well ventilated and smelled just fine. It's funny to see the comments: still all the negativity about Macgregors and heavy opinions backed up by... nothing.

Go over to the video on YouTube and leave a comment if you can, let's help Dan's algorithm popularize our boats.

(The secret to using the facilities on an X while standing is to have one foot inside of the head, one outside, and then lean on the starboard wall. You will be firmly wedged even in rough conditions and everything will be lined up where it needs to be.)

Or, forget the head, and just stand on the leeward side of the cockpit. :)
