Bugs!!

I was out on Lake Ontario yesterday and my boat was swarmed by these small bugs, all over the top sides, sails and lines. Bugs weren't landing on me at all. I remember them early in May other years but not his many. I shook them off the sails before stowing them. Great day but the boat is a mess.

We get this little nasty ones that seem to like dark colors (bimini, sail cover).

DEET. Love it.

I was thinking that next time I would spraying DEET on a cloth and wiping the cockpit. I'm afraid it may damage the gelcoat...what do you guys think?

What do I think.....

Don't go out on Lake Ontario that early in the season!

:P

Wait til June when the water is warmer and the bug die by the thousands each day due to the heat 8)

Can't help you on the Deet question but man I don't miss all the bugs from the North (7 years in Alaska). You would think with all that cold the buggers would either die off or move south!

Rumdirty, remember these are hardy Canadian bugs, eh!
Funny thing is there weren't any bugs last time I went out a couple of weeks ago. I guess it was MBOR on Sunday-Mad Bugs of Ontario Rendezvous on my Boat :D

Hey Beene, it was either wax the boat or go sailing...Hmmmmm....

We're have some awesome weather here lately. 8)

The bugs (midges, mostly) just exploded here too, almost overnight. They make a mess.

A dozen years ago my business and the next door neighbour's (a body shop) got hit by black graffiti (young hooligans) on our white garage doors. I have access to a fairly wide range of organic solvents, and none of them would work to clean it. Until I sprayed some insect repellant (with DEET) on it. Amazingly, it worked like a charm. My neighbour wondered what I had used, he had tried even more exotic solvents than I had access to. I have no idea which of the melange of ingredients did the job.

Gives an idea that you might want to watch out what you put the stuff on, I think especially plastics would be risky, so try in a small hidden spot. I've always been leery about putting it directly on my skin, I put it on my clothes (not synthetics) instead whenever I can. Some of the botanicals are of limited usefulness compared to DEET, though.

I have a friend of mine, that has used Deet Deep woods to restore plastic
head light covers on cars. He posted photos on FB. seemed to do the job.
Do not know about the long term effects of the Deet on the head light
covers as of yet.

My wife is afraid of Deet. She's also afraid of GMOs. Not me. I'm afraid of bugs. Spray me some Deet and say goodbye to bugs.

I went out for my first sail of the season in Lake Ontario at Bronte yesterday. There were hardly any bugs around and this was not the case over the weekend when I launched the boat.

Yesterday's sail was stunning and I think the summer like weather we are having is killing off the bugs fast. 29 deg C forecasted for Sat....oh yeah!

This just in from the fast-breaking news world of insect repellents :D ...

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/maga ... /index.htm

As I recall, in the past, non- DEET based repellents were less effective. Things improve.
