I did up a modle a while back, Someone, . FORGIVE ME I can't remeber who, was nice enought to take a ton of photos and then I used what is called "photography" software to create the 3d model form that. It worked, but at the time there were a lot of limits on the resolution of the camera and the software and many other things. Today the technique is much more common and easy to use. I used 123d catch to do it. There are other ones now.
You could also do laser scanning, but that requires a special instrument that is $$$ photos is the future anyway.
