26x Boom during a bridge crossing.

Post by randall330 » Fri Jun 15, 2018 1:01 pm

I have the mast lowering system and it works great. The question is to lower the mast to about a 45 deg. angle to pass beneath a bridge should I remove the boom or just let it ride in the cradle? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds like an unnecessary step, but I am guessing It would need to be secured somehow ... So maybe removing it would just be as complicated (or simple depending your point of view).

Or you can do this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_7Yg4b6TSk

You can lower the entire rig with the boom attached.

putting it in the cradle will be fine.

Be careful, the mast is very unstable at 45deg. Its a bit safer to lower it the whole way and then raise it again. I did the halfway once for a bridge, every time after it was the whole way down.

Just make sure the sliding companionway cover is closed. Otherwise things can go crunch. I angle the boom off to one side as its coming down too.

...and be mindful of the backstay so it doesn't get tangled in the prop!
