Hello:
I have a Mac 25, I love it, but when we got to sleep there is not quite comfortable than I would like. When we sail we allway sleep there. I am doubting to upgrade to Mac 26 (S,D,C) because the 26 aft berth space. 1st Question: Do you know if there is higher or tallest the head room space between Mac 25 and Mac 26?.
I like Mac 26 because the water ballast and is lighter than 25 for trailer and easy to launch in lakes. (I actually sail in lakes and ocean).
I have seen a Mac 26X I like the inside space, but the space cost is to high and the performance lower then Mac 25. Second questions: what is your opinion about to upgrade to Mac26 S/D/C or keep sailing in Mac 25?
Thanks,
Ernesto Mac25

Ernesto:
the head room is about the same in the 25 and the 26 d,s. The aft bunk space is nice and is about the size of a queen size bed. there is not much overhead room in the berth however, not even enough to really sit up in, but definitely room for sleeping. I think the 26D is a fast boat to sail, points well, is easy to control, and can be improved upon with many mods if you like. I use it mostly for lakes, but sail occasionally in San Francisco bay where it handles just fine. The water balast makes it a little tender, but if you reef when you need to, it still is fast, and very controllable. Some people say the D boat is faster because it has the dagger board with less drag than the centerboard and cable of the S boat.
this summer, I used it mostly for boat camping with 2-4 adults and 2 small children. I purchased a 5 gal. portapotti put up alot of clothes hangers in the head area, took a small bbq and everyone had a great time. I have a main, jib, and a genoa in my sail inventory and really don't need anything else right now. I met up with other boat campers in Mac 25's and they all said they loved their 25's but given the opportunity would upgrade to a 26D or S in a minute.
Hope this helps.

I would also upgrade from the 25 to a 26c if someone gave it to me. Certainly the classics are just as fast if ot faster than the 25, and they have a much better layout with the aft bunk. But taking the relative purchase costs into account, the Mac 25 cannot be beat IMHO. Just cannot see shelling out another $6k, on average, for the classic. I can beat the hull out my 25 and not have a care in the worldabout the $2400 I'd be out if she sank or was otherwise destroyed.
