Marina Theives

There were a significant amount of thefts at our Marina right at the end of winter.

All four docks got hit and around 1/3 of the boats were affected.

Some piece of turds low life broke into boats and stole motors. Small stuff like batteries, winch handles and sunglasses were the primary booty.

When we got the e-mail I didnt want to go to the boat to check it out, when I did I was pleased to discover our boat had been one that was overlooked.

Some of the boats were forced open and some were entered through the lazzarettes and subsequent quarter berth walls kicked out.

The people across from us lost a new 4 stroke kicker, they will only get 2K of 4.5K spent from insurance.

I and I'm sure most everyone on the board works hard for their stuff. It really sucks when someone comes along and helps themselves to it. MAkes a good case for public testicle removal.!!

I suspect it was an inside job (someone that knew the gate codes.) Otherwise how would they gett the heaviest stuff to a vehicle. I find it hard to believe they did it from a boat wothout being spotted by the lake patrol.

Yup, I had a VHF radio stolen from my boat 2 years ago at Lake Oologah in Oklahoma. It was mounted to my steering pedestal, so at least they did not break into the boat. The docks were burglarized a few times in the 3 yrs my boat was there. Not sure if they used a boat or went around the security gate. My guess is a rowboat in the wee hours of the morning. They would shatter the lights and do their stuff in the dark. Broken glass everywhere.

The radio was due for replacement anyway, but dang that makes me mad. When I put the boat there, they said they had a security camera on the web and everything. But I guess they never got it hooked up. All that money for slip fees and you would think they could get a darn security camera working.
The boat will be at a new lake this year.

I'm glad your boat was overlooked. Funny this should come up as I have recently been thinking about "security" on my Mac.

Here's what I did - I went to Home Depot and found these "Warning ! Electronic Security" stickers. I used heavy dutly clear packing tape to put this warning sticker on the companion way door next to the lock hasp.

The way I figure, if a would be theif saw the sticker they would think twice about breaking the lock if they felt an alarm would go off ...

... very cheap and easy thing to do to protect your boat.

When I have more time down the road, I will actually wire an alarm to the door and sliding hatch ...

Ok so one of the Mod's I have been considering is adding a standard 12V Car Alarm System with motion detection & remote. I have talked to the mechanics at Car To... and they didn't seem to think it would be a problem.........

So what do you think?

Also doesn't your Marina have wireless TCPIP Video Camera’s? They're cheap now days and the Marina where I keep my boat has them back to the office. It would be nice if they would publish the video on a Owners web site to allow me to check my boat row remotely but.......

All of them should have at least that level of protection now days! But one of the nice things about a Mac surrounded by multi-100 thousand dollar yatches is we tend to be overlooked by thieves!

BTW when I get my boat out here I plan on keeping it in my yard and pointing a TCPIP Camera at my boat so I can check on it while away!

i kind of agree with nemo on the motion alarm,car alarms generally use motion sensors in a stable enviroment,id go for an alarm that triggers on breaking contacts

I really shouldn't bash the Clay County dept of parks and Recreation in the Kansas city Missouri area. Did I say that out loud?

We have a nice marina, very modern restroom facilities, nice new docks and gates but I feel like we play 2nd fiddle to the powerboat population of the lake.

I built a cheap 12v alarm on my last boat out of two 12v relays, magnetic door alarm switches and a 12v siren. It was hooked up to a simple toggle switch in the cockpit locker that I would turn on when I left.
I'm sure a simple car alarm would do as well, but this used no power until it was triggered.

I also put a real cheap lock on the companionway hatch. I figured if they want to break in, let them do it without busting up the fiberglass. Once they opened the hatch the alarm would scare off would be thieves in the dark.

Also this is a case for a marina where you know the "full timers" that are always around and can keep an eye on your stuff.

What sucks about this is these dirt bags not only stole stuff, but they ripped boats up in the process.

Talk to the old men in the village, those who remember the rage of the 50s and 60 when youths went around destroying property out of anger because some people had and they did not. I think it is starting again. In the cities vandelism like tagging cars in a neighborhood, or in the rural areas breaking into and trashing summer homes or the upswing in cattle rustlings. Often these people come from homes where they suffered enough abuse and destruction of self image to cause them to lash out in anger. Should the government do something, yeah, put them into a military boot camp and then a work/study program or if they are old enough into the military and debit their pay until they repay the damages. Just don't send them home, the parents had their shot.

I have 4 kids of my own but have raised around 18-20.

I have "kids" (other peoples) nearing 30 that stay at my house when they come into town and not at the parents. Makes me proud that I have made a difference to them.
