Mid ship cleat

Post by USAF M26X sailor »

Anyone use a jib track mounted mid ship cleat? I'm concerned the cabin top is too high compared to the bow/stern cleats and would tend to heel the boat vice keep it stationary in a narrow slip.

I use the winch for the Genoa as a mid ship cleat. I wrap the line around once, and have it held tight by the jam cleat.

USAF;

When I bought my 2006M I made my dealer install EXACTLY what you describe, cleats on both sides on a track amidship. He said I would never use it. He was right - - - I never have - - - but I'm still glad I got them - - - can never have too many cleats - - - you never know?

BTW, the dealer had to ask Roger where to place them, where was the strongest point to install them so they would handle the stress if necessary and Roger agreed I didn't need them and would never use them - - but you know me - - - I wanted them anyway.

I'm also the guy with 3 AC and 3 DC outlets - - - the one on the pedastal is very handy for a handheld GPS.

I have a few of those portable track mounted cleats and I use them regularly. I have two SS ones that I put in place (only one on the starboard side) while getting under way and then again when docking. I use it as the last line to unsecure when getting under way and the first line to secure when docking. It provides control from amidships during these manuevers. I do not leave it there once docked though as it may go missing. I have a cheaper plastic one that I leave on the genoa track and use for a spring line. I use two spring lines, a bow line, and stern line for dock tie up, no need for the midship cleat, it serves only for manuevers. I find the midship line to be very convenient and easy to use for manuevers but un-necessary for final tie up at the slip.

midship cleat

Ditto Ray (Nice Aft).Have been using the winch as the midship cleat for 3 years without ill effect. Use is temporary ( I don't need to leave the line from winch to pier when I close up the boat and go back home). Ron
