1991 MacGregor original trailer rust repair
The curved trailer rod that holds the centerboard in place in case the rope gives way while trailering is rusted on our 1991 MacGregor 26' original trailer. It's the lowest point of water drip on the trailer. In lieu of cut and weld, we're thinking of using weld epoxy with some galvanized sheet to wrap it and maybe some hardware. Anyone tried shortcuts with any success?

I'm amazed that a 1991 trailer is still functional. Where you sail must have very pure water!
I'd be wary of an epoxy fix. It could look okay but wouldn't have very much strength.
If that area has rusted out completely, what is the rest of the trailer frame like??

The new aluminum trailers for the M simply use a piece of wire that the shroud cables are made from across that spot in lieu of the solid bar stock.
With that in mind, perhaps a stout piece of rope or two tied in the best place could do the same for accidental drops?
Not sure if a solid bar adds anything significant to the structure, mechanical-wise.

Oskar,
Rest of trailer will get first wire brush and repaint this August. Looks okay so far. We used the boat in salt water the first few years, then didn't use it for about 10 years, now it's back in fresh water. Thanks for the interest.

Excellent point about the structure of the trailer.
