In the late 1960's I was posted to West Germany as a young, single, US Army Lieutanant. I lived in the Mannheim area, about 12 minutes North of Heidleberg, if I drove "flat-out" in my Porsche. I travelled all over Southern Germany while on duty, spending many weeks in Munich and at Oberamagau in the Bavarian Alps. I travelled around all of Western Europe while on vacation. I lived in Germany for two years. What great times I had! I have very fond memories of those times.

I spoke a dialect known as "GI German". Don't worry! Your English is certainly better than my German.

And you didn't call yourself a donut so don't worry about it, some of us who speak what is call English have trouble understanding what those in the deep South portion of the US are saying and when our friends from England and OZ use local jargon I enjoy that feeling of internationalism that it brings to the topic. You are absolutly right, we are in the sailors pages but I have to say something to kellyhansensouth (who to hull is kellyhansennorth?). I have no daughts about my English in general, in the mid 60th I have bin in the USA for pilot training and have been traveling through the states severalt imes. However from time to time I´m missing very special expressions and I intended to place pictures of this things here to show items I need the name of. I´m on the way to learn how to do this, thanks to F ranc C.

However-and that´s it- I didn´t get the clue of what kelleyhansensouth was talking about in his last input..not at all!!! Kelly could You do it for me again, but using common (for me) words, please!!!! Thank You in advance.

Hallo dennisneal,
at first lets talk a little about sailing, so that nobody can blame us to be on the wrong pages ! Right now I´m at the Lake Genevá in Swizzerland, my daughter is living there with her family. An hour ago I launched my boat, to raise the mast is left over. That´s about it.
Now the second part of my input. Things are sometimes very similar. In the mid 60th , as very young leutenant in the German Airforce, I have spend about 8 month in the USA, Wiliams AFB for pilot training. As You did ,I enjoyed this time very much, however I had so much fun to travel around with my (as I looked at it) big american car, a Dodge Dart!Unfortunately they passed me out doe to missing feeling for A/C . So I had to spend the rest of my flying carreer in the rearseat of Phantoms and Tornados . It´s not like being a pilot but anyhow it´s better than real work .
Have You ever been to Germany after this to years in the service?

The last time I was in Southern Germany was in May/June, 2006.

Have you ever considered motoring/sailing from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, to the Black Sea in the Ukraine via the Rhein/Danube, (Donau) Rivers? I think it would be an adventure. Maybe I'm not too old for just one more. I'd go for any, or all, of the trip!

Hi Dennis,
what You write sounds really good! My home is 5 miles depart from the Danube riverin a small village called Oberstimm/Manching (You will find it on Google Earth)very close to Ingolstadt. From time to time when I´m walking along the river for sure I´m thinking about going down the Danube river to the Black sea with my boat. I´m keeping this allways in mind and actually I would do it with the right partner. My wife is absolutely not interested in going on the at all and boating is not very common in the area I´m living so my frieds as well are not interested.
The part of the Danube I live close to can not be used by boats. About 15 miles from here is the village Kehlheim. Coming from the NW the Rhein-Main Danube Canal opens out to the Danube. From there the Danube itself can be used with boats. I would not consider to go all the way up to the Netherlands I would launch the boat in Kehlheim.
