Anyone made a covering for transom?

Post by xsailor »

Still a newbie, here, but I can't help but worry that the dog is going to slide right out the back of the cockpit, past the motor, which could be really awful. I have searched for all of the after market items produced by several companies for MacGregors, and do not see where anyone offers anything to put across the self-bailing transom. My previous boat had a similar transom but the bottom came up about six inches or so. Thought about trying some lifeline netting but would still need to edge it with something and use screw snaps to mount so it could be opened to clean the boat. Anyone know of anything pre-made by anyone?
All help appreciated.

got to bwyachts.com They make a plexiglass cover and mounts. If it's not on their site, call them. (Blue Water Yachts in Seattle.) Ask for Gail. You'll probably need to do that anyway since you can only phone in your order.

Fair Winds to you & pooch,

One solution is to find a cooler that just fits below the helm seat and rig some fittings to hold it in place. Others store their hatch cover behind the helm seat which gets it out of the way while closing the the cockpit area. Another person criss-crossed bungee line across the back just aft of the helm seat on some screw-eyes and stores boots and other wet items back there. That might have been Duanne Dunn, who has a nice website accessible from one of the sailing links. He has made tons of well thought out mods to his boat for extended family cruising.

Here is a post I made two years ago:
I bought a motorcycle cargo net - 15" x 15" with six hooks attached and installed six stainless eye straps, three on each vertical side under the aft lift seat. The net stretches enough in the opening to deter the pups from walking thru, and looks great too.

I stopped using it after a while after realizing that the dogs weren't in danger of being back there while underway. The motorcycle cargo net is easy money & I still have it on the boat. An even bigger concern was the dogs jumping over or sliding off the cockpit seats while being hands full at sail. For that, I attached a short safety line with gated hook to each of their doggy PFDs.

I call up the photo & post it soon.

On an :macx: the companionway cover perfectly blocks the transom opening under the captains seat....dont pinch the fuel line if you are underway.

Our dog fence, at the rear of the cockpit on our X, is a leftover length of 15 inch deep, white, wire closet shelf (from Home Depot as I recall) trimmed to slope the shelf ends to fit vertically in the tapered space under the helmseat, a few inches ahead of the raised motor. Rubber-like caps on the exposed wire ends protect and frictionally grip the cockpit sidewalls. The throttle and shift cables back the fence. When not in use, the fence lifts out of position and stores under the dinette table in the cabin and we sail in fresh water, so rust is not an issue.
However, the dogs don't go under the helm while we are underway, but rather tend to lean on the top of the cockpit sidewallls, so the fence may be overkill. No money invested however. Ron
Incidently, another leftover length of the same shelf material is suspended inside the galley cabinet at half height, to serve as a shelf.
