26c keel cable

Post by Meriachee »

Hello,

Snapped the keel cable yesterday in the strangest event ever. The right combination of a steep wave, a quick gust and starting the adventure at better than 25 degrees of heel completely unloded the keel, and when it dug in, the cable snapped. Funny, the cable is not loaded up when the keel is completely down, and the pull line is NOT tied off. (How the heck?) The bang was unreal. sounded like we were torpedoed.

Anyway, does anybody know the length of the keel cable for a 1993 26c? Might be nice to get a cable before the boat comes out this week.

Cheers

I bought a 4' piece of 3/16" SS when I was working on my centerboard right after I bought the boat. When I bought the boat, the cable (1/8" galvanized!) was rusted and broken. When I replaced it, I also put in an extra block to give a 2 to 1 purchase and make it easier to raise the board. If I remember right, I had a few too many inches of cable, so I cut off the excess after I clamped the SS cable to the block for the 3/8" line. 4' should be enough cable, unless you are going to run all line with no SS cable as I've read some people do. I like the way mine works. Good luck. :D -Paul
