Do all new motor have emergency pull-start ?

Post by racegig »

Like I mentioned before I want to get a new Mac and have'nt decided what motor to put behind. According to what I read on this forum the Etec 50 seems to be the way to go. But does it have emergency pull-start ?

I know it's a silly question but I went to look on their website and they don't mention anything about it.

Do all modern 50hp motors have emergency pull-start ? Do some have regular pull-start ?

Macgregor mention 50 hp maximum. But I think I saw 75 hp mentioned somewhere.

E50DSL = 240 LBS
E60DSL = 240 LBS
E75DSL = 320 LBS

So I guess there is no sense going for the 50 HP... Does DSL mean salt water ?

On the Evenrude website the Etec 50 Hp has a tiller on it. Do you keep this ? Is there a no tiller version ? Power trim ? Can you still lower the engine manually with no battery (dead) ?

Since the ETEC's are magneto ignition, I believe that they are able to be started with a rope. Hope your arms are strong. I would suggest that you go to an etec forum like this one for the best info.

Jut got done reading the manual and yes you can do everything manually and tiller is optional. Guess I should have read the manual before. :?

There is no mention about a salt version whatsoever. So what does DSL meen is it just the color ? Is there something different in the salt water version ? Is there a salt water version ? I even saw somewhere that the saltwater version was somewhat more powerfull... :?:

I really am not up on the ETEC nomenclature, But I believe that the suffix has to do with the shaft length. XL, DSL, etc. This is just a WAG though. Try searching the ETEC forum for dsl and see what happens.

The Etec 40/50/60 can be pull started quite easily. Make sure you pump plenty of petrol through the bulb before pulling and it should go in a few tugs- personal experience. Have a 4 foot, 6mm rope handy for this. I tied a loop and wrapped a tea-towel around the handle. It always feels great when you hand start a Etec 60.

Evinrude use to colour code motors Blue for fresh White for salt.

With the introduction of the ETEC this did not happen as all motors below 90hp where blue until recently. Some of the older 2000 models apparently came out in fresh and saltwater editions.

In the past saltwater editions had some stainless steel parts such as steering arm, water pump shaft bolts etc. They were also 2-3 kilograms heavier.

Today the only difference is colour - Blue fades faster in the sun :) and is $100 less than white.

I carry the emergency rope but seeing as I am a whimp I carry a spare battery as well.

E50DSL means

E - Evinrude
50 - Horsepower
D - remote electric control
SL - 60 degress trim/tilt

Cameron;

Don't you hve to unbolt the top cover off the 60 Etec before hand starting?

BTW guys, the hand rope starter comes with the engine, of course.

From memory i think the cover just 'pops' off using rubber holders. No tools necessary.

That's true--yyou can pop out the cover in a jiffy. Same for my older Johnson 50HP. I never had to start mine with a rope though

Had the same dilemma when I upgraded from a 25HP Nissan 2 stroke to a 40HP Merc Bigfoot. No one makes a motor over 25 horse with a pull handle for manual start on the outside of the motor cover. Had some electric and battery problems with the old Nissan and was nice to be able to pull start it to get it going again. I have a honda generator with a surge starter so if my battery goes I can get the new motor going with that altho I haven't had any problems. Motors over 25 HP will have emergency rope starters but as HP goes up so does the cranking difficulty. So guess you'll have to spend some time at the gym doing your "Ahnold" imitation. Good luck.
