12 Gallon Fuel Tanks
Hello Everyone, I'm back again with another question as I'm considering upgrading to 12 Gal. fuel tanks for my 26M. Which brand do you guys recommend Moeller or Tempo ? Where can you buy these tanks at a good price ? Also, is there any other modifications I must do to secure the 12 Gallon tank or any thing else that I don't know about pertaining to this ? Thanks in advance to all of your replies to this and my last post.

Re: 12 Gallon Fuel Tanks
Flembo18,
I do not think they make the Tempo 12 gallon tanks anymore. If you find them you may want to look at my post mid page:
http://macgregorsailors.com/forum/viewt ... f=8&t=9324
I installed them this way as to not drill any holes into the cockpit floor area. I wanted to minimize the chance of any spillage that could find its way to the hull liner or cabin.
If the tanks are no longer available I think a lot of people are using 4-6 gallon tanks...I hear this works pretty well.

Re: 12 Gallon Fuel Tanks
I'd encourage you to keep looking if you want real Tempo tanks. Some retailers still may have some NOS items around. Here's a couple of searches I found:

Re: 12 Gallon Fuel Tanks
Consider the possibility you might have to carry the full tanks some distance to put them on your boat. A full 6 gallon weighs about 37.5 lbs. Double that for a 12. You're more likely to use up 6 gallons before it goes bad than 12 unless you do a lot of motoring.

Re: 12 Gallon Fuel Tanks
I have the 6 gallon tanks and can vouch for their portability. Its also nice to go to the gaz jetty with a 6 gallon tank and say...fill er up just as the last guy pays his 150$ fill up.

Re: 12 Gallon Fuel Tanks
Flembo,
Let me know how that Moeller 12 works out and how well it fits under the seat. I also am considering a second 12-gal tank rather than 2 x 6-gal.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: 12 Gallon Fuel Tanks
have you ever lifted a 12 gallon tank thats full?,personally id go for the 4 x 6 gallon temo tanks, set up as duane has it.
Over here it is very rare to find Gas for sale at a dock so you have to purchase it before hand, the weight of 12 gallons of gas is a deterrant
mind you maybee C130 can design some sort of air to boat tanker refulling system

Yep ,
I also went with the 4 x 6 gal tanks because sometimes the diff in gass prices at the dock & the pumps is as high as $1.20 a gal or more , & I hate to be gouged
A Guy can buy a lot of beer with that loose change

Re: 12 Gallon Fuel Tanks
I am actually considering going the other way, I have a 6 gallon tank and seldom use more than 15 gallons a season and while I have not done any extensive motoring yet, I have come close to running out on several ocassions, a 3 gallon with stablizer added under the other seat would be a simple backup and cover most any motoring requirements in a pinch. I really do not see any need to carry the excess weight, or buy the extra stabilizer for the fuel. If I ever do the Alaska trip or head over to the Bahamas I might add a second set of tanks but just to get out and about on the weekends there is better use for the limited space under the seats. But if you do a lot of motoring.......

I have managed with two 6 gallon tanks for six seasons now. The price difference for gas only applies at your home slip where you can put the tanks in your trunk and make a run to the auto gas pumps. Once out on an extended trip we are hostages of overpriced fuel at the various marinas among the islands. I can squeeze anywhere from 3-4 hours from one six gallon tank when on a trip. Even while on a trip I usually take the tanks over to the gas station in the dinghy to avoid having to manuever the Mac over there after which I still have to remove the tanks from the boat and fill on the dock. There have been occasions where the gas pump was just over on the next dock so I tried carrying them by hand over there and discovered first hand just how heavy a full six gallon tank is! I certainly would not attempt that with a 12 gallon tank! Once you go with a big 12 gallon tank you are committed to getting your gas from the marinas and filling them in the boat, they are too heavy to lift out and onto the docks. Also, once both 12 gallon tanks are full you may need to constantly switch back and forth to keep the tanks depleteing at the same rate in order to maintain equal weight on each side of the cockpit, I notice the difference with just my two six gallon tanks, one on each side.
I will confess when I first heard about the larger tanks I was planning on going that route but now with more insight I am not having to use hindsight.

Re: 12 Gallon Fuel Tanks
Thank you all, so much, for everyone's sincere posts & concerns, that's why I love this forum so much . SERIOUSLY, I dig every angle you all conceive, every individual trial & error theory, advice & knowledge that you all have to offer. ARRR, A Motley Crue I see in my midst !! Avast Mates ! Here's my game plan: Plan A : If the Moeller tanks that I choose fit... GREAT !! I'll pull up to the nearest roadside Gas Station & fill'em up. Plan B: Just checked, NEWBIE HERE, I already have ( 2 )six gallon tanks with tie down straps for both 6 & 12 gas tank... THANK YOU so much previous owner !! Now I can use the (2) SIX PACKS as back up if the 12's don't fit and are a total hassle, I can always sell the 12's to the owner of the "Maltese Falcon" for his 70' dinghy !!!
Plan C : I also have other portable tanks, including the original (2) six Gal. tanks to transport, use or fill the 12's. My main concern is that the 12 Gal. (Low profile) Moellers that I just purchased, SHALL/WILL, fit perfect into the my 26M compartment. Bottom Line is this : I bought this boat to relax & have fun...don't want to be running/looking for gas every other OR 4TH time I use it.. Yeah, I know .."just use the Sails."... BUT, as you all know very well , under individual/ different circumstances, S#%T Happens ! I just HOPE the new Moeller's do FIT!!!! Sincere thanks to ALL for your advice, not to worry, I'll be back for more.

Re: 12 Gallon Fuel Tanks
I have a "permanently" fitted 12-gal on the starboard side. Would like 2 x 6-gal on the port side. So I could also use this info.
Thanks,
Jim
