gas grill mounting

I am planning on mounting a small gas grill on a 26M using two 45 degree flanges, one on the boat the other on the bottom of the grill, with a short piece of 1" SS tubing connecting it together extending the grill over the side of the boat. Am I going the right direction here? Also where should it be mounted for safety and ease of use? I have gas tanks under each cockpit seat. Thanks

That sounds about right, as long as the grill is over the water. They sell rod connectors that may be clamped onto the cockpit's rail, but if you can fashion your own, that's cool too. I have two grills and they both jut out of the cockpit, off the two rails. All oil that may be flammable drips into the water.
Of course, I have an extinguisher handy in the cockpit, just in case.... (mounted under the seat). I too initially worried about the gas tanks, but decided it was a manageable risk

i have the gas barbie hanging over the rails,the grease drips into the water and the odd splash on the gelcoat.I go with the fire extingusher in the cockpit,always a good idea to have one there with all that gas about.

barbies on the back of the boat are great,its a great way to end the evening,watching the sun go down with your food cooking away in the magma,it all instantly conjures up memories,it can also make the other boaters hungery when the waft hits them

I don't have a full enclosure, but we have the magma kettle grill. It's a quality piece of stainless steel. It works great and isn't too big to get in the way as it hangs off the back. We've even baked a pizza for our son in the thing.
There is nothing as nice as watching the sun set, enjoying an adult beverage while grilling something off the back of your boat. Grilled food tastes so much better on a boat.

We also got the nice canvas cover to match our sail cover.

Spinnaker Jim has some great prices as well. That's where I bought it.

Kinda depends on how many folks you plan to feed, Q1. I have the "Magma Kettle 2" round grill and I can easily cook food for 4. The difference between the standard 'kettle' and 'kettle 2' is that the latter comes with an adapter that allows it to also be used as a conventional gas stove, though in reflection we really don't use it that way very much.



And the folks are right, you need to get a bracket that can swing it out over the water, because the grease does indeed drip off it and it can get pretty messy. Note that there are also legs for the Magma, so you can use it off the boat as well... a valuable selling feature, I think...

We also bought the cover for it - conveniently, it is in a Sunbrella blue color that matches our bimini and sail cover.

Another alternative location for consideration...

I ended up mounting our grill from the railing in front of the cockpit, to the side of the companionway hatch. It has a removable bracket so the grill can be easily stowed below, and it is well away from the gas tank (single 12 gal under captain's seat), out over the water, out in front of the bimini (so no grease/smoke rising into the bimini), and it's very comfortable sitting on a throwable cushion on the deck just ahead of the winch.

Anyway, I thought it was a better overall location than the back rail (which is occupied anyway by lifering on one side and anchor reel on the other).

I agree, Patrick. We mounted ours on the curved bit of rail at the front of the cockpit. Makes it easier for the cook working down in the galley to just pop up to the cockpit and check on things without having to traipse past/over anyone sitting in the cockpit.

The curved bit of rail in the front of the cockpit seems like a great place for the BBQ and can be used without getting in the way of the full enclosure rigging. UNFORTUNATELY I can't find a curved bit of railing in the front of the cockpit on my M.

I bought the legs for my Magma and now I turn the Captain seat around - and just cook on the reversed captains seat over the transom. I removed the screws from the Captains seat hinge and just let it free sit.

This has worked better than any variety of clamps I have used on the railings

Like Kelly my helm seat is hing free. My Force 10 (small) grill is mounted on the railing on the transoms port side. I chose the Force 10 mainly for the mounting device, which seems to be more husky and stable than the Magna , IMHO.





Unfortunately, unless you find the barrel/log type model on eBay or somewhere, Force 10 small is no longer made. Company was sold to an Hawaiian company. However something similar is being made by them. Great BBQ, and according to my Bro. who has a Magna on his boat, mine cooks more evenly than his (no hot and cold spots on the grill).

I place the helm seat on the port side cockpit bench and place my 2 burner Colman camp stove there for cooking the Veggies. With the helm seat removed I am able to stand in the in that area to tend to the BBQ. The Force 10 is permanently mounted on that transom Port rail, covered with a sunbrella cover made for the unit. No cooking done down below. Use the Colman drip coffee maker in the AM which I set up the night before on the Colman.
