Jib Sail Cover
I have the stock jib with a "sock" sail cover and I'm really hating the sock. I have to hoist it up with a halyard and zipper it as it goes. My old boat had a nice sunbrella "cover" sewn into it.
Does anyone know where I can have my jib altered to have the cover sewn into it like most roller furling jibs?

Russ,
I suspect that there are very few sail lofts in Montana. I had a 2nd intermediate set of reef points put into my main sail after our first season by the local [Havre de Grace, Maryland] loft that's affiliated with Ullman Sails. Here's their loft locator page http://www.ullmansails.com/loft.aspx?q=1

Hey if you manage to get the UV strip your after, sell me the zipper cover. I've been after one of those for ages and can't get one the correct size. I'm in the UK but more than willing to pay all postage/shipping costs.

Re: Jib Sail Cover
We added a black sunbrella UV trim to our genoa this spring.
We put our sock on for extra protection when we are not using the boat, but when we are on the water it is taken off and stowed below.
We had it done here in Vancouver Canada. Cost was around $200 Canadian

Re: Jib Sail Cover
I bought my sock from BlueWater Yachts in Seattle for $165.00, it would have cost me that much to have a UV strip sewn onto one headsail and the sock will cover my genoa or jib. My Schaefer furler allows me to easily change headsails so I needed something to cover both sails without paying twice for two UV strips.PhilEOD wrote:Hey if you manage to get the UV strip your after, sell me the zipper cover. Yes it is a bit of a chore to hoist the sock on and take it down, requires two people to make it easy. I just put an extra little pully up there and a real thin line for a sock halyard and it works fine. But as Russ said you have to zipper it while someone at the mast hoists it, a bit of a pain and I fully understand why he hates it, perhaps I will come to hate it too.

Re: Jib Sail Cover
I'll search for a sail loft and send it out to be done after boating season is over (which will probably come pretty soon).
Phil, my sock is black and came with the boat when we bought it new last year from BWY. It does provide better protection than the sunbrella "trim" but I'm used to an "automatic" sail cover from our previous boat. If you are still interested, we can make a deal for it. I have no idea what shipping across the pond costs but it can't be that much.

Jib Sock vs. Sewn-On Cover
There are advantages and disadvantages to both ways ...
Sewn-on covers are "automatic", yes. But they afford less protection, and if you have jib and genoa you'll have to have them sewn onto both sails.
Jib socks, or sleeves, do afford more protection - especially trailering - and you only need one. But, yes, they're an extra few minutes' work to stow before you sail and to install after you've returned. For me, they're no more trouble than the mainsail cover, and less trouble than folding and bagging a hank-on jib out on the foredeck in a chop.
Since I've got the CDI furler with its own internal halyard, I use the regular jib halyard as a "sock halyard" and whisker-pole topping lift. I shackle this halyard to the top of the sock, then zip-and-push as much of the sock up the furled jib as I can manage; then I can pull it up, zip some more, pull up some more until I've got it chock-a-block at the hounds. (I have a separate spinnaker halyard at the very top of the mast, running to a block on the bow pulpit and a long D-shackle at the forestay tang. Works nicely in light airs, which are the only time I use the chute.)
My jib-sock is on its last season, and I'm looking at the ATN sock for a replacement. It has a lace-up line to pull it up snug around the sail, so it won't be "flogging" in high gusty winds. It's costlier, though - about $10 per foot, so $270.

Re: Jib Sail Cover
I agree with Rick except I don't have a spinnaker halyard and don't use my jib halyard as a topping lift for whisker pole...but that sounds interesting...will have to check that out.
The only slight issue I have with my jib/genoa sock is that if don't take care to furl my 150 Genny tightly the middle can be kinda/sorta "fat" and I have difficulty getting the sock to go past that "fat" part...I have to use my fingers and stuff the sail down inside the sock until the top of the sock is past the fat part. Then it goes up the rest of the way smoothly.
So sometimes I unfurl the genny and refurl it tighter when I am done for the day to ensure it doesn't get "fat".
Love the sock.
Cheers,
Jim

Russ,
That sounds good to me mate let me know how much you want for it with the cost of the shipping.
Perhaps we should communicate directly instead of splashing all over this forum. My e-mail address is [email protected].

Re: Jib Sail Cover
I had mine done at Quantum Sails. They have locations all over the place and even smaller ones not shown on their map. Mine was done by a Quantum rep in Montreal that does not show up on the Canada map. Maybe they have somebody near you.
