Southern Cal cruising

Post by Rolf »

I am thinking of a trip down along the coast from LA all the way to San Diego. Any so cal locals here, could you please advise a route that would allow me to stop often and find shore power guest slips and or/hotels (must keep family happy and comfortable)? I would like to stop at Newport ( thanks BK for earlier info), Laguna, Dana Point, etc. Nothing like the first hand advice from the pros here who have already done it (I will request info for going north to Santa Barbara come Summer!).

Rolf, I'll chime in on Oceanside. Most holidays and some summer weekends are a pain if you don't call ahead and make reservations. It is a sleepy harbor but nice restaurants and shops abound for such a quaint little harbor. The harbor patrol controls all slips and they are easily accessable to head and shower facilities. Sometimes you can get AC power and fresh water slips, but not always.

They have a dump station, launch ramp, fuel dock Mc donalds, etc. (FREE, as all San Diego ramps are!) Unless you want to motor all the way back, I might suggest you drop a trailer/tow vehicle in one of San Diego's main launch ramps, it can stay there for a week or so without hassles, crime is rare also! Then it only takes you 3 hours to get back home! :P

L.A. to S.D. is a nice trip. Personally I'd skip past Newport and head Dana Point. You can get a guest slip or just anchor overnight (I believe it is allowed there). Oceanside is a nice harbor - call ahead to reserve a guest slip. I don't believe they allow anchoring withing the harbor. From Oceanside you can make Mission Bay or SD in a day. I've done LA to SD in two days but you'd have to motor some. With 3 days each way, you could sail most of it.

It was along time ago but, I did a long weekend trip from Dana Pt. to Shelter Island in SD Bay. We trailered to Dana Pt. with a driver aboard to return the trailers to Shelter Island Launch Ramp. Spent the night at Dana intially anchored but moved to a guest slip as the weather was SCW and the anchors were not holding. That lee shore was mighty rocky! At that time guest slips were $10 a night. Call for current prices. The next day we sailed to Oceanside for the night. Next night we anchored in Sail Bay portion of Mission Bay. On the following day we sailed around to Shelter Island. You could skip Mission Bay and make it to Shelter Island from Oceanside easy. -- Rusty

Dana Point

If you get a chance stop at Dana Point, the county runs the guest slips there. The cost is 12$ a night and that is with water and power. Also the rest rooms and showers are clean and nice. If you check in after 4 you will need to call the harbor patrol and get the bathroom code.

Right next to the guest slips is the tall ship RM Dana it is worth a look, also the harbor has lots of nice places to eat and shop.

When i lived in DP i would keep my boat in the water and go down every day just to relax and sit on the boat.

Tom, Dave, Rusty, Rich,
Thanks for all this excellent advice! I'm printing it as we speak. A week long trip to San Diego or Oceanside during "off season", with trailer waiting, seems like the ticket. Who needs AAA when you got Mac Sailors.com?
