Blue Hull

Post by flyboy26m »

I would like some opinions on the blue hull. I like the color but was wondering about heat from the sun making the cabin toasty and curious about scratches?
Thanks!

Having seen some Blue Hulls that were quite faded where I keep mine, it made the decision of choosing a white hull much easier. The sun is brutal in Florida and I the white hulls (both X & M) that I have seen aged much better than the blue hulls.

The Blue hull will hold more heat from both direct and reflected sunlight. This likely a good thing in some places and a bad thing in others.

I forced my head to over-ride my heart for the same reasons listed above.
My arms and back still thank me.

I do enjoy looking other peoples blue boats after they have done the work, and it's sad to see the blue boats that don't get the necessary routine waxings.

I have a hard enough time keeping the black stripes looking good.
Don't want to go there for the blue too.

It all does depend on your latitude.
Further north UV is easier on the gel coat, from what I've heard.

Ahh, hull color question. I believe Macgregor sells 50/50 of each.

If I were keeping my boat in a salt water slip without a way to hose it down, I'd probably go with the white for sure.
It's purely an emotional decision, practical vs. amount of work you are willing to put into it. Yes, it will show scratches more but if kept clean can also shine nicely. Both colors really should be waxed to protect them, but white is more forgiving.
We keep ours in a fresh water slip and it has held up nicely. No sun fading or any of that, but I also wax it regularly (in the Spring). We've gotten several compliments for our shiny blue hull. It's all a matter of opinion.

As for heat, I don't know, theoretically dark colors hold more heat but I haven't really noticed that as an issue. Out of most colors, I find blue to absorb less heat. Now those beige cockpit cushions could fry eggs until we cover them with blue towels.

I voted to spend the extra money for the blue

White is an excellent color -

for milk and eggs
for bread and underwear
for paper and Duke basketball players
for Navy dress unis and surrender flags
for Tom Sawyer paint and Penn State Football games
for Ted Nugent Buffalos and Roy Schreider monsters
for grey wizard promotions
for Broadway Joe's Cleats
for sugar and salt
for painting door and window frames
for french manicures
for determining a good shooting distance in revolutionary wars
for lots of stuff it really is

but it is one crappy color for a boat
sanitized , generic
slow, boring
no one builds excitement and uses white - no one
white is sooooo cal and catalina
driving a MAC is more, much more
70 horses need to propel fast sleek exciting hulls - like blue

You ever see a white racecar? Me neither

what color what the mach 5? amazing how quickly we forget. Blue is the new black this year so those with the blue hulls are much more fashionable.

I've yet still to see a blue hull sail past my slick faster lightening white hull with just as fast white sails 8) :P
Must be all them white clouds blowing & filling out all my white sails pushing my white bow through all them whitecaps spraying my boat with pure white foamy spray :D :D :D :P
J
PS Funny how them their big blue waves become their fearcest and pick up speed to become white when they crest the wave tops

Personally, I would have been just as happy with a white hull. The blue hull option was added to spice up the deal on my boat when I bought her. I admit she's pretty but I do worry about anything marring the finish.

I haven't sailed her enough to earn any bragging rights on speed...

My last boat was phenomenally fast and blue to boot...its speed didn't have anything to do with the 260HP 350cc V8 under the aft deck... :P

When you say things like this it just gives Beene and Highlander ideas... 8)

I think the blue looks better, but it is hard to keep it looking good, harder to fix the inevitable dings, especailly important for newcomers. and the blue does seem to warm up more on hot summer days than my older model white mac.

with a name like blue angel, though, I had no choice

Thanks everyone,

I think both boats look slick. I like the double decker windows. I confirmed my order for the white and will have
to sooth the heart with a cd player. If I can go a little longer between waxes that will sooth other parts of my body:)

They are all good reasons for your hard to make personal choices.

I saw the Blue Mac in the Macfactory video, and I knew it was the perfect sailboat for me. Not only for just the color combination, it is everything that I was looking for in a boat. I'm very happy with my decision as most of you are with yours. 8)
