Just did a shakedown cruise on the 26d new to me

Post by cbig »

@ Marina del Rey. Interesting boat, not a fast turner compared to the boats I am used to. I did notice the tendency to round into the wind. It was blowing about 12 mpg, there was a small craft advisory, 2-3 foot seas. Didn't seem much of a problem for me but the previous owner came along, thought it would get rougher and wanted to head back in, so we did. He insisted we put in the reef. Was fun. Takes more tiller effort than I remember and the jib needs some force to tighten or turn to the wind, tighten, and get back on tack.

We did find one broken thing that holds the sail to the mast. (mainsail) Don't know what it is called but it is plastic and rides inside the mast channel up to the top clew hole. Any convenient source for this?

Thanks!

Chuck,

Congrats on the successful shakedown cruise.

The part you are talking about. Sounds like a Sail Slug which you can order at Sailnet or West Marine.

Good Luck.

Cheers,
Jim

Glad you made it out on the water. Sounds like you have too much weather helm. A slight bit is good, but as you have discovered, too much makes you round up. Tuning the standing rigging should help. you need to retension the rigging so that the mast is more forward than you have it now. Do it in small increments, until the handling becomes more to your liking.

Thanks-
Good tips. I will look into tuning the rigging after a couple more trips. I gathered from the previous owner that was considered heavy seas! He left it tuned thusly for safety sake. He did not want the knockdown sensation while sailing with the wife. I've previously sailed coranado 15's, Hobies and Cal 25's. The wind and weather seemed normal to me. The Mac would hold the course if you kept up on the tiller and took the wind.

Learning!

Does the boat have the stock/factory rudder? I haven't experience what you are talking about, since we have an IdaSailor rudder, but have read of people talking about what you are describing with the stock rudder.

Congrats on getting out,
