How far do you heel your boat.

Yes, that 300 lbs probably saved my butt. Knowing that's there in the back of my mind probably also makes the water ballast not the highest priority on my checklist. I also have 55 lbs of lead I poured into my dagger board so that helps too. I really don't recommend sailing without ballast but it's good to know that the M can survive my "bozoness."

My Mom puts on a lifejacket and begins to give me a bad look around 10 degrees of heel!

Edit: I am shocked that the boat rounded up and didn't capsize - good to know.

We're around 25 here if memory serves (I'm taking the picture from the bow).

That's when I'm using my jacklines and a safety harness.

I've had Bossa Nova over past 30° in gusts and I don't like it. Earlier this week I was out in 15 knots with gusts to 20+ kts; I had one reef in and handled it better than I'd feared, but I wouldn't want to live there. OTOH, waddling (certainly not "running") downwind yesterday evening with about 2 kts of breeze ... it was just bloody-minded stubbornness that kept me from reverting to the "iron genny" till 19:30.

As I have stated before, it is not unusual for us to heel in excess of 30 degrees and intentionally try to hold it there. Our Clinometer stops at 45, and we have gone beyond that. The ballast works well. The boat keeps coming back

By the way, I don't think we are going very fast since the wind is escaping from the sails.

What I tell power boaters all the time is that I can give them more thrills at 3MPH than they can get at 50 They like their boats flat on the water, so I have never had the pleasure of entertaining any takers

Our first day out we reached 38 degrees, later I remembered that we had an empty ballast tank, Max and I had fun our wives were a bit concerned.

Having read the story of the tragic capsizing on a Macgregor 26, I would have thought it would certainly capsize if attempting to sail with no ballast.

Given a few posts, it seems that is not true. Curious, has anyone on this forum capsized their 26X/M?

Chip Hindes took his onto his side on the Hudson IIRC (search posts by CHindes) when he was sailing unballasted. He managed to right it and bail out ok.


Capsizes I can remember:

Drunk Captain/10 people on board Champlain incident - broke too many operating rules to list here.
one in the UK (dinghy fouled rigging in heavy wind)
Fran/NC (left a porthole open below decks)
