26M RPM Guage not consistent

Post by jschrade »

My RPM Guage is in consistent on its readings. When working correctly I correlates to the correct RPMs for the speed I am going. But sometimes it read a couple thousand RPMs too low.

I have an ETEC-60 and otherwise all is quite well. Anyone have any suggestions?

Probably a loose or corroded wire....look behind pedestal and break/remake all the connections..

Totally agree... this is likely your problem.

Also, check your grounds.

In my case, I had been chasing a troublesome issue where my tach would fail (completely) at random... and other gauges and the instrument lights also would sometimes work, sometimes not... turns out the at the IPO* used the type of clips shown below the attach much of the wiring within the pedestal... and needless to say they all have corroded over time and become either intermittent or wholly non-functional... and the ground one was the worst of the lot. I recently spent a whole weekend rewiring the entire pedestal with newly soldered connections and proper waterproof disconnects, and everything now works flawlessly.

I do hope you're kidding... you really *didn't* use those damned clip-on connectors, did you??!!

I *hate* clip or crimp connectors... call me a Luddite, but I'm a solder-it-on kinda guy.... never had a soldered connection fail yet.

Thanks, I will check this weekend. My boat is new from the factory but I did notice a problem with water running down the cable from the GPS and dripping into the bunk in the back. This may have accelerated things.

Those stupid little connectors ought to be outlawed !
I have seen brand new , expensive pontoon boats wired with those things !
They barely break the insulation , thus barely making a connection , add a pinch of corrision and then you have no connection !

Most every trailer wire kit you buy gives you these junky things, which will guarantee light problems
