Double Anchor Roller for an S....

Post by Sumner »

I'm just finishing double anchor rollers to hold our 22 lb. claw and 25 lb. Manson on the bow. Someone asked to see pictures on another forum so I put 4 up. Thought I'd share 3 of them here.....

Image

I made up the prototypes above. They didn't take long to make and I thought I could transform them into the real thing in a day or so. Wrong, it has taken a lot longer than that, about a week.

Image

Here are the almost finished rollers on the boat a few hours ago as I was making the bracket that ties them together in front of the forestay. It gives them sideways stability and some additional support out front as it lays on the nose of the bow with protective rubber sleeves.

Image

The two sides are not the same and are made specifically for the 25 lb. Manson Supreme which will be on the starboard side and for the 22 lb. claw that will sit on the port side. The double rollers on each are positioned for each respective anchor along with their lengths. I tried to make them so that the anchors look to be side by side.

The left two arrows point to posts that the anchor rode will go around at a slight angle to get to the side cleats on each side of the boat. There is also a center cleat. There will be two short lines with carabiner hooks off of it and those will snap onto the chain to hold the anchors back on the rollers. I curved the ends of the roller supports so that the line could wrap around them instead of the posts if desired.

The center arrow points to a quick release for an inner stay. I raised the forestay up the mast some that the new roller furler is on and left the old forestay where it was up on the mast and will secure the bottom out of the way, but will be able to hook it to the quick release if needed to run our old jib or genoa or a storm sail.

The bottom arrow points to a lever that I can position on the Johnson Lever on the new forestay and then tension the inner forestay down to the quick release and pin it there. It should take very little time to hook up the inner forestay if needed. I read about running two sails (like jibs) off the front of the boat while running and not using the main. I'd like to try that with our old jib on the inner forestay off one side and the genoa on the furler off the other.

The right arrow points to the bracket that sits on the very front of the bow that I made today and explained above.

I can't believe how easy it is to pull the anchor up with these rollers. Since we anchor almost every night this is going to be a big help now and in the future.

If anyone is interested the total weight of what is in the picture above is about 14 lbs.. I didn't weigh what the two ABS tubes weighed that I took off,

I'll post the build later and a picture with the anchors in place soon,

Instant Restless approved on this one!
Got to get the tig n plasma up that end myself... 2 fat anchors! :D Bit greedy.. but look at the ramming potential of that :o Endless fun.
I would like to fit a bowsprit into the ss section when I get round to it.. probly weld the cleats to the whole ensemble too. Must be pretty pleased with yourself on that one sum! Nice one.

Sumner,

That looks fantastic! Is there any twist to it when pulling the anchor out of the bottom, or are the two fingers enough to keep it from twisting?

As soon as you can measure up an :macx: , a 1997 to be exact, I'll take one! :D

I've been wrestling with the problem forthe need for proper anchor storage ( not to mention proper anchor) and your solution seems to address a number of issues...even the mock up using timber....great.I've found projects like this a hobby which adds to the enjoyment of life and when sailing any improvements to the boat adds another level of satisfaction to an already great way of life

Saw the rocket-launcher style tubes on a couple other people's boat pics, and thought it was a great way to get easy handling of the weight (don't have to bend over so far?) and convenient storage of two anchors...but being a newb, is there a drawback (or several) that it would be good to know about? (if there's a post about this already, please just point me to it)
Thanks!

We used the tubes last year, our first year sailing. They worked but getting the anchor in and out is harder than the roller. I'm 66 and in good shape, but it is surprising how heavy a 22 lb. anchor and 30 feet of chain feels along with some mud on the anchor when you have to lift it hanging over the side.

Bringing the rode in when you get to the chain you end up dragging it up and over the edge of the deck and then when the anchor starts to clear the water you have to stand up by the pulpit and reach out and pull the anchor up and turn it around and put it in the tube. Not always fun depending on the water/wind conditions. If you are younger, stronger and don't mind being up at the very front of the boat in weather it is probably no big deal. I don't mind being up there but unfortunately I'm getting older and weaker as time goes on. The rollers will sure help to make sailing more enjoyable for us since we usually anchor out every night.

When you pull the chain on deck and are ready to lift the anchor out make sure the chain is secure. It sure likes to go back overboard :( .

Put some tubes on and use the boat and then make a decision,

I found a cheaper easier solution that will work nearly as well if a bit less elegant. On my larger boat I placed a lenth of stout ss pipe across the deck a few feet back from the stem head and attached it so a foot or so hung off either side. The anchors come right up and stow easily there. For small boats like the venture etc a two inch in diameter pipe would work and could be u bolted to the deck. I put a stop on the outboard ends of the pipe to keep the line fron slipping offf. This system works very well for me and will cat many types of anchor. Care must be used when pulling the hook not to scuff the side of the bow but that is the only drawback to this solution using a few feet of pipe and two u bolts and four big washers.
