Identify that boat

mmm k, maybe a bit of help from a wannabe macowner but owns(dare i mention it) runabout and has two kids in university, another kid heading that way and is constantly broke kinda person. Been a long time since i attempted this here, well been along time since i posted here period and mighty few visits as well(read disclaimer)! Let's face it, with the exception of liveaboard, life and sailing really struggle with cohabiting.

This may or maynot be accurate information so use absolutely at your own risk. i have uploaded what i am led to believe is a Venture 24 brochure and manual with some rigging how to from 1970, certainly it appears appropriate from the pictures given here.

It is a Venture 24 built by MacGregor Yacht Corp. It's length is given by the manufacturer as 24' 7".Measurements are ususlly given without appendiges. From your explaination I suspect that someone before you may have stolen the boat or someone sold it with a bogus title, or both. The serial number for the Ventures of the 60's and early 70's can be found in one of the stringers under the cockpit. Most were crudely drawn in pencil and then the numbers were drilled into the stringer. Most hull numbers matched the sail numbers but not always.

My user name 40years is how long I have been sailing Venture/Macs.

well whatever the case is Ive checked the stringers under the cockpit and so far ive found nothing and no evidence that there ever was anything there

I've been told that the HIN numbers can be located either on the stringers under the cockpit or on the transom (either on the inside or on the outside). I know that on the MacGregor 25, the HIN number is located at the upper starboard corner of the outside face of the transom.

As far as refurbishing, especially with the keel, check out this site: http://mjs.mjsco.com/ . This guy totally re-did his V24, and did a pretty darn good job photo-documenting of the process. Look through the hole thing...he has it organized chronologically, rather than by the specific job. If nothing else, you'll get an idea of the undertaking and some pointers in how to do it. Most of the keel repair stuff seems to be shown in Weeks 13-18. Inspection was Week 2. You'd be surprised what kind of extremely ugly decay you'll find under a little cracked fiberglass.

it wasnt that uncommon in many states in that time period, to not register a boat of this size that was lake sailed....ditto for the trailer reg.

An innocent explanation could be that the person who registered it in 1990 had no clue as to origin, so had it registered as a homebuilt.

When it was registered as a home built it was probably due to a lost title or they were trying to pay less taxes. I had issues on a trailer with no registration and title I tried to be honest on where i got it. the DMV wanted to do a title search in Colorado and Texas bla bla bla + more time + more money. I left and came back the next day and said I built it, wala tags in two seconds and I was out of there.

I still havnt found a hull number on her but ive gotten a positive id on her. 1971 Venture 24 there are two differences which are listed in a post titled unusual stringers. if anyone have answers for me there I would appreciate it. and no I kept it way under 3k and she came with a set of brand new sails main jybe and spinnaker
