You can have your mechanic reprogram the ETEC for XD-50 usage. It is less expensive, but the engine will use more, so in the end it'll pretty much amount to the same thing, I guess. The 100 burns cleaner, so I went that route. A gallon of XD will last you plenty. I don't have hard data, but filling the oiltank with oil brought level of the gallon of oil down by a couple of inches in the gallon can I had purchased two years ago. It is very economical
There is no replacement to the XD ETEC oil.
ETEC makes marine grade engines, but my mechanic told me that the differences (other than the cowling which is white) are not significant. I have used mine only in sweet water--except for a stint in Florida three years ago, for two weeks. Can't tell for sure, but I would guess the ETEC holds its own pretty well

"There is no replacement to the XD ETEC oil."
Actually, I just read about a test done by AMSOIL, and they now recomend the "hp Injector synthetic 2-cycle oil"
in e-tec engines on the lean mix setting.
I am not sure if Evinrude would honor the warranty if there would be a problem though.
I think I will wait until the warranty is over before changing the setting.

Re: MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ETEC
One thing to watch out for if you are getting a brand new boat with a brand new E-TEC:
the engine will burn A LOT of oil in the first two hours of usage over 2,000rpm. In my experience it will burn about 1/4 of the tank in those first two hours. See Operating and Maintenance Manual.
Make sure you account for it on the first outing ... after that the oil level goes down reeeaaallllyyyy slow.

Re: MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ETEC
As to reliability, the ETEC used to have a lot of problems, but the newer versions have been runing well.
As to speed, like all builders, the Mac brochure speeds are for a bone stock, lightly loaded boat. The 23 mph they claim is not untrue, but not very likely in the real world, we all end up with a certain amount of "stuff" in our boats. We have seen 20.8 mph with the ETEC 60 on a fully equipped boat with 2 people and fuel, but no cruising gear.
Do consider that the new Suzuki DF60A is lighter than the ETEC 60, uses less fuel and makes about half as much noise (by actual db measurement). It is also about 1 mph faster, both at cruise and top speed. Also no 2 stroke oil to carry around.
Neither engine is a mistake, but our customers have been much happier with the Suzuki.

Re: MORE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ETEC
Is carrying around 4 stroke oil an advantage over carrying around 2 stroke oil?
