Dang! What a dumb mistake.
He was lucky. Imagine if the Mac did NOT have a water ballast tank. Those holes would have gone right through the bottom of the hull.

Not sure but has anyone considered the fact that batteries SCREWED down is the problem......I would have thought that something of that weight would need to bolted down....ie look for an installation point where there's access to the other side for a nut & washer at least not to mention some sort of plate/glassed in ply.

Re: Mac'M Ballast Tank Leak ?
On my
and the few other macs for which I've seen the interior, the batteries are held in place with a horizontal straps that are held by bolts. Considering where the batteries are usually mounted, I'm quite surprised anyone would try to install a battery tray by mounting it to the bottom of the bilge. As Bart pointed out, using screws to mount that weight to fiberglass is asking for trouble, and how would anyone possibly be able to place a proper bolt there?

Re: Mac'M Ballast Tank Leak ?
I installed a rubber mat under my batt's to prevent chaffing it is not glued or screwed just sits their & is held in place by the weight of the batt's , the batts are secured by two horizontal straps midway up the batts
Figured it had to be a drilled hole where one should not drill just think if they had drilled further out on the hull now that would be more ballast than one would want !!

Re: Mac'M Ballast Tank Leak ?
If it was a new Mac the motor was probably fitted by the dealer and if not why didn't the motor installer copy the installation of the house battery, from memory I think I just made a new strap and moved the original one over so that both batteries fitted in the space.
For the front battery under the V berth just fibreglassed a strap onto the top of the ballast tank and bulkhead to hold it secure and that would have been better than relying on screws or tapping a thread.
Certainly wouldn't be a preffered installer.

Re: Mac'M Ballast Tank Leak ?
When Macgregor sold boats in the UK themselves, they used a seperate retail engine seller, who had installed stacks of engines onto Macs, but since they pulled their own dedicated sales out of the UK about 18 months ago, the new agent, apparently doesn't have a clue about Macs
. My guess though, is that the motor and batteries were installed by another retail engine supplier, local to the new agents' premises, and this is the first Mac he has done! Oh dear!

Blimey, if the above is true, for people buying a new Mac in the UK that certainly does not inspire confidence.kitcat wrote:When Macgregor sold boats in the UK themselves, they used a seperate retail engine seller, who had installed stacks of engines onto Macs, but since they pulled their own dedicated sales out of the UK about 18 months ago, the new agent, apparently doesn't have a clue about Macs![]()
