There is a concern , that if you turn the "master " switch to off ""Edit: ooopppsss When then engine is running " you could even destroy you engines charging system...

Some switches have a safety feature that will shut down the engine if they are switched to off when running. As Dive indicated, you can blow the engine alternator if it has no where to charge. Not sure of the type of switch you have, or how it is wired.

Most modern outboards require 12 vdc to run the electronics, and if you remove the battery reference voltage the electronics will shut down as a safety. Also, things like the safety and overheat loops will probably need 12vdc to be enabled.

Would you list these ? If available for a reasonable cost they might well be of interest to members..

I don't have a complete list Dive, but as an example, there is the Perko 8503.

It has an alternator field disconnect feature, that can be used to interrupt the ignition circuit for outboards. Although not a use in the product description, I have seen it in real-world use. I don't use it personally, as I have an automatic combiner/isolator system.

Just out of curiosity why would you need to turn off your master DC switch while the eingine is running?

There is no reason that I can think of, but it can happen by accident, or through ignorance.

Agreed.. and thanks for the link on Perko Rich...... For the Love Guys its an additional $17 for a switch that just may.... save you hundreds and ultimately thousands of dollars( depending on the situation.)

My Perko battery switch was installed at the base of the companionway ladder just on your left side as you step down. For the first time ever, just last week, I accidently hit the Perko switch with my foot and the switch moved to the OFF position while the engine was running.
Within ten seconds I realized my clumsiness, and turned the switch back to battery 1 position, but the damage had been done. I was afraid to shut off my Honda 50.
But, the only damage turned out to be a couple of fuses in my panel and in my autopilot. The Honda survived the mishap. :|
