DANGER -- Alert to owner of a Mac M (SUMMER WIND)

Post by LOUIS B HOLUB »

A "new" Mac-M in the Watergate Marina, Kemah, Texas, has a missing "ring-ding" (starboard shroud) ! Boat name is: "SUMMER WIND"
I've put a "note" on the hatch, wrapped in clear plastic with details, warnings, and of course, my name.

I'm hoping to be in Kemah next weekend, and will bring-along, and install a "ring ding".

HOPE THEY'RE not demasted before it can get fixed...! ! I've not met these new owners yet.
I plan to notify their Marina Mgt. concerning this "pending disaster"

Looking out for one another, is our Mac'ier Code ! :)

If you go there again, and its still the same, maybe just stick a ring ding in it, let them know what you did. Or something handy.
Its great seeing others looking after our stuff out there when we cant always be there.

ring-dings among many other hardware items should be kept on board as part of an emg. contingent, either tape them up with white hockey tape , or sail tape if their near running rigging or sail area that can catch them & rip them off or use small wrap ties to keep snug in other area's & shroud covers over the shroud adjusters at the base plates also helps

Don't recall if this has been discussed before (my apologies if it has), but those ring-dings are supposed to be taped up after they're set. The jib sheets (or anything else) can easily catch them and either deform them or pull them out completely. Seen that. :x

Hadn't even gotten my rig fine tuned the last bit and it happened (maybe second time out). I have plastic protective tubes over the lower shroud fittings, but I plan on cutting "V" notches in them so they will sit low enough so as to cover the lower ring-dings and not expose them to the risk if tear-out. The (white is best) tape does make fine-tuning less convenient, and therefore less likely to be done as soon as needed.

The Marina office said that they would notify the Mac-M Owners...but I've received no calls, or EMail response -- YET.
I'll make an on site-check next weekend...and leave a "new" ring ding with a "NOTE" if things aren't fixed.

We MAC'IERS naturally look out for one another...it's a natural thingie' :P We 'aint like those "high-ka'flutin" pricey boat folks that snub one another. :D

Welcome! That's what you call two degrees of separation - I'm voting Louis to be your sailing mentor guy until you get the ropes sorted out. :D
You'll find lots of stored advice on this site to answer most of the beginners questions you're bound to be asking, and don't be shy about making further posts to fill in the gaps from this great bunch of knowledgeable wisecrackers.

Cheers .... Ross

Hope you and your crew visit the Kemah, Texas sailing areas ... buncha Mac'iers over here ! Happy Sailing and WELCOME ABOARD ! ! If you are seeking a nice "wind protected" Marina, excellent rates, good security and accomodations, you can "Personal Message" me for further information if needful.

>>>>GOOD NEWS NOTE>>>> (Concerning this thread topic) >> My fellow Mac'iers, I received a nice EMail today from the owner of "SUMMER WIND" -- very appreciative that he and his crew apparently have avoided a "world of hurt" (according to his words). All's well. Mast and shrouds secured now on their new Mac-M.

Glad this matter was resolved with out a serious accident :!:
