Suzuki 4 50 HP 2000 temperature alarm codes

Post by rtrinkle »

Does anyone have any temperature alarm codes for a Suzuki 4 50 HP, year 2000 or 2001?

This past weekend we were experiencing some problems with the engine -

Saturday we set sail for Antidote on the Chesapeake. Winds died down, so at the Rappahanock River, we turned the engine on and powered around Windmill Point, and up into Little Bay where we anchored at the mouth of Antidote creek. Great anchorage if anyone is ever thinking of a southern Chesapeake trip :D . Anyway, we were under power for about 2 hours, no problems at all.

Sunday morning we decided to weigh anchor. Starting the engine first, the engine sounded fine. Its first start up with higher RPMs as usual was fine, but about 30 seconds later, when the engine idled down to regular idle speed, the temperature light came on and started beeping. The beep code was 1 second long every 3-5 seconds. Water WAS coming out of the exhaust hole as normal, and I immediately shut down the engine, lifted it to check the cooling water intake and dropped it into the water again. Started engine again, and the same problem occurred.

Later that day after sailing back to port, I tried it again, with the same results. I did not see anything in the Selco manual for this code. Has anyone ever experienced this? Is there any insight anyone can give me? My first thought was impeller, or thermostat, but I'm not real sure since the exhaust water is coming out like it always does, about 1 - 1.5 feet behind the engine. I'm also not sure when the impeller was last replaced. I was planning on replacing this winter but it might be time now.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the Suzuki 50hp 4stroke engine aswell however a 2005 modell. I´m not sure about exactly the alarm signal You met. But this summer I was alarmed y a strange singnal myself.
During strong headon winds of 25-30, in gusts up to 40kts, a red warning light was flashing in the RPM-indicator at the same sequence You described. I did not notice a sound but perhaps I have missed it doe to the noise of storm and heavy sea and the rain and stormprotection I was covered with. Shocked in this severe weather situaation I rushed to the next marina, fortunately only about 2NM off my position, going with the RPM just around 1200, enaugh to move slowly into the direktion of the Marina, the wind from the side, slightly from the back on the required heading . Tt was a naval base, and to stay there I had to state an emergency case.
Next morning I phoned my Suzuki mechanic and he told me not to worry, the flashing red light in a one second sequence is just a reminder for the onehundred hour service. I think that´s not the optimal code :x .
He gave me the advise how to get this alrm signal off: switch the engine ignition on, than pull the emergency ignition switch at the throttle box three times within 10 seconds. Will You try that? :P Good luck!!

2BonC,
Thanks for the reply,, I'm getting a steady temperature light on all the time, and the 1 second beep every 3 seconds. I will try your recommendation and see what happens. I think I'll get a Suzuki tech to look at it as well.

The funny thing about it, was the engine was off at anchor, overnight (about 14 hours). I was under power in calm winds and seas for about 2 hours with no problems, dropped anchor. Spent the night at anchor, just as we usually do. The next morning when we went to weigh anchor, and turned on the engine, we got the error code. So the engine was off for about 14 hours. The alarm code starts once the engine RPM drops (about 30 seconds after then engine is started).
