Just installed Kicker outboard motor on my 26M

Post by Paul L »

I thought I'd post these, because in my search here & in the Mods section, the only pics I could find were on an X.
So, this took 3hrs and 30 trips in and out of the far back corner of the rear berth!
Pics are mainly meant to show
1) the motor is clear when the rudder is hard over.
2) Prop is clear out of water in up position.
3) the bracket mount close up
4) fully submerged if needed as backup power (hard to see underwater).

Also, when in the down position, because it's lower, it makes it easier to transfer the motor to the dinghy. Mercury/Tohatsu 9.9 2 stroke weighs 75lbs.

looks nice, hows the steering with 9.9 at full throttle, does it take both rudders down to keep it from wanting to turn to the right? is the 9.9 at 25inch motor, i thought only the 6hp came in 25inch size.

Looks nice. How are you controlling the throttle and the forward, neutral, reverse. Have you installed remote controls? I'd still like to do that,

Is it going to drag in the water if heeled over on a starboard tack?

:) lol. I reached my lifetime limit of Jimmy Buffett 3 1/2 years ago. All finished. Life is better!

Boy, you got me. This is my first ever outboard. It is a "short shaft". The mount has 14" of travel, which when up with motor tilted back, the prop clears the water surface by a good 6 inches, and fully submerges past "cavitation" plate when down.
Steering? Haven't tried it yet. Just installed yesterday. My purpose was to have an accessible mount to store the dinghy motor. The fact it will work as emergency backup is just the cherry on top.

Throttle tension is adjustable. It will hold when let go of (same with direction, which can be locked). Steering will be with one or both rudders. Again, this is just a backup, emergency scenario.

hahaha your joking right !? The admiral won't let me heal over. Besides, up here in Puget Sound/San Juans, the fickle wind isn't the concerning factor, rather it's the ever present tidal currents, for which this backup now gives me peace of mind.

Thanks for the questions & feedback. At the BWY Mac rendezvous last year, with some 30 Macs, I only saw ONE with an extra motor. But I wasn't paying attention to how he had it mounted, if it was as a Kicker too, or just dinghy storage. Good to know it can be both.

Actually mine is a Garelick, but very similar. I bought mine at Harbor Marine in Everett Wa. Basically same price as West Marine, but without their logo :)

Yes, Tahoe Jack's mod was the one I was looking at, but his is an :macx: . Interesting how his mounting plate is right over the "hull ridge" (whatever you call it) but on my :macm: the plate is on the flat part of the hull below the ridge.

Ill start/split a new thread on this if the discussion is useful

My Nissan 4 HP kicker has a 6 inch (outside to outside) bolt mount footprint - so Im thinking of making a new plate mount for this motor from wood ( 3/4 inch solid, glued and varnished) with two heights -

one for powering Catigale in backup mode (and also easy loading onto the tender)

and one higher up which will keep the motor out of the water for water transport

Sketching concept onto the broken mount picture ....something like this....

Ouch! Thanks for the warning. Future mod... putting our Nissan Armada backup proximity warning on the Mac :P

BTW since I started this thread, I finally tried powering the mac with the 9.9 on it's bracket. Got the Mac up to 6 knots with no effort...fully loaded, towing dingy, water ballast etc.

Next thing to try: I think I can use the mast raising pulley temporarily anchored in the cockpit to lift the motor off the bracket onto the dingy and back.

Update -- I outlined the sketch design above in wood, but didnt like how skinny the 'raised piece'was considering it would have 60 pounds of motor hanging on it.

I made a new mount from two pieces of 3/4 inch (actual) red oak glued with Gorilla Glue - I will epoxy and varnish these and see if they last longer than the plywood.... :D :D

I raised the height of the mount 4 inches from the black plastic mount to lift the motor a bit, but still let it be used as a back up motor on this mount.

About 15 USD for the oak cut from a larger piece..
