Re-Naming A Boat

Post by GaryMayo »

I understand there is a good luck or anti bad luck way to re-name a boat?

How does a person rename a boat and stay on the good side of the winds?

(her name is Whoops, see why re-naming her is so important! lol)

My all time favorite movie stars Cary Grant and Leslie Caron is the classic, Father Goose. I am toying with that name, or possibly Catherine, the name he renamed his boat to. Or maybe Goody Two Shoes & The Filthy Beast.

Anyone here old enough to remember that movie? I have seen it hundreds of times. My wife and I make a game out of saying the dialogue while watching it. The two french sisters were in real life, french sisters.

Something to think about...
You must repeat the name of your boat three (3) times when calling on the radio.
A long name can be cumbersome.

I like the story of the woman that had her husband name it MINE...she loved that scene in Finding Nemo.

The closest thing I will get to a radio is a cell phone.

Met a guy this summer on our Rideau Canal trip who sailed from Hamburg Germany on a 20ft boat. He named his Boat EMMA for the sole purpose that it was easy for him to spell on VHF.

Ditto on Mother Goose. A+. like when Trevor Howard says, "Goody two shoes is going to marry the filthy beast." Hilarious. Had the hots for Leslie Caron. I don't think renaming a boat is bad luck, A boat should reflect something about the owner. However, My Dad was aboard the original U.S.S. Midway, an escort carrier in WWII. When the Navy launched the new Midway, now a museum in San Diego they renamed his ship the U.S.S. St. Lo. All the old salts said this was a bad omen. On October 25, 1944 the U.S.S. St. Lo was the first U.S. Navy ship to be sunk by a Kamikaze at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Phillipines. When Cunnard was building the new Queen Mary there was talk of naming it Titanic II. That would have sold a lot of tickets. :x When the Vikings would christen a boat they would grab a slave by his arms and legs and break his back across the bow as a sacrifice to oden. I'll stick with champagne. Fair Winds and Full Sails...Old Salt
