Where to put the dinghy?
Where to put the dinghy?
Hey all,
I just bought a 9 foot inflatable. It's a pain in the ass to put it on the bow, but that's what I've been stuck with. My dock
is as shown. Is there a way to hoist to the boat out of the water from the dock? I've looked at air docks and some other gizmos but they are either too expensive or just too bulky for such a light weight boat. Any ideas?

Re: Where to put the dinghy?
You can't just pull the dinghy out of the water and onto the dock with the painter line? That's what I do. Perhaps I don't understand the question.

Re: Where to put the dinghy?
you can pick the dinghy up and place it on the bow, by using your jib/cover line and the winch on the port side. Do it all the time at Catalina. Works great.
make sure you use a pulley attached to the deck.

Re: Where to put the dinghy?
try a spinnaker or jib halyard? to a bridle on the dink?
are you lifting it with the engine in place?

Re: Where to put the dinghy?
No engine, so it should be pretty easy. I'll try to the jib halyard. Didn't want to put it on the dock because it's dirty and full of old nails. May put some astroturf on it though. Thanks for the advice!

Re: Where to put the dinghy?
I have a shackle on the bow lifeline. This allows me to break it so I can drag the dinghy on the deck. It's still a bear, but it makes it easier. I like the halyard idea, might try that next time.

Re: Where to put the dinghy?
type of dingy? rollup or rib?
you'll often see powerboats on 'chocks' resting on land. no reason you can't make some for your dingy, and leave it on the dock (private dock?) if they allow that.
just get some 2x6" (or as wide as you need) and cut openings for the bow profile and stern profile, and use a 4x4 as the middle (you want it heavy). and rest the dink in place.
if you plan ahead, maybe you can use the chocks on your bow deck....
