Slime Removal With Bottom Paint

All,

I'm getting ready to pull my 2011 26M off my inter-coastal mooring (she's been on the mooring since April 2011) for the off-season and put her on the trailer until April 2012. She has 2 coats of bottom paint that was applied prior to her initial mooring and she may have a bit of slime that I may miss prior to her re-occupation on the trailer.

What product/technique works well to de-slime and NOT remove her bottom paint?

I don't know what kind of bottom paint you've applied. Our is painted with Interlux Micron Extra, which is a multi-season ablative. End-of-season slime comes off easily with a pressure washer, leaving the paint intact. Just don't get the spray head too close to the hull.

Here is what we did:


1) Epoxy Bott...apply 2 coats of Interprotect 2000 epoxy
barrier coating prior to bottom paint...

2) 2 full coats of Pettit UltimaSR 60 anti-foulant-- first coat
red (#1036), second coat black (#1038)...

So, just spray her down huh?

I also have had the barrier coat with two coats of VC 17 for the last two seasons. I slip all year, but a shorter season (June thru mid October). I power wash the bottom and use a mild car wash brush and soap for any stubborn areas. Any accumulated growth comes right off with only minor effort.

Have you looked at the bottom at all yet? I'd really like to know if you have any barnacles growing with the Ultima SR 60?

We were in the water there almost 2 months and had some very small, under 1/8th inch barnacles on the bottom when we pulled the boat out. It took about 30 minutes to scrape them off back in Utah with a Teflon spatula.

When we go back down I'll be putting a barrier coat on the Endeavour along with bottom paint. It will be in the water probably 6 months max a year, so a lot like a trailered boat. We used Sea Hawk Cukote Biocide Plus on the Mac and I will either put that on the Endeavour or the Ultima SR 60 if it looks like it works better, so would like to know what your bottom looks like when you pull the boat out.

We had some slime at the waterline while down there, but it wiped off in a few minutes with a sponge from the dinghy. No slime further down.

I have seen ZERO barnicles to date, but I will give you the final when I pull her out next week.

The prep and Ultima SR 60 application was done by a vendor at the Pensacola Boat Yard, they said it's the best stuff around for the ICW and/or the Gulf.

X 2 If any paint comes off you can repaint with same Micron using a small roller. The brighter "new" paint will totally blend in after the first launch.

I found in fresh water that a brief full-throttle run will peel the worst off. Also, if you can, power wash it before it has dried when you haul it out, if it dries it will be harder to remove, even if you re-soak it.

The ablative is like a bar of soap, so the tough areas you won't want to scrub too hard (if at all) because it removes the surface - you'll see the colour on whatever you're scrubbing with.

The above may or may not apply to salt water fouling.

fwiw, a tip I learned working at a marina in college was to hit barnacles with a torch as it comes out of the water. (lightly).

that kills them, and makes them crumble when you get to scraping them a few days later.

kinda doubt anyone will have any real problem barnacles like you see on full time in-water boats, but it works petty good, and the yard workers swore by it.

I'd see them with a propane torch walking around a boat, about to get a new bottom job, burning the barnacles for 1-3 seconds before moving to the next one.

-for slime use a pressure washer, but you have to be careful not to pit the gelkote or take off too much paint. or just use a scrubby pad.

Pulled her out this morning, used a high pressure wand at the car wash.

Most of the slime came right up, did have about 10-20 barnicles though.

Also, a little bit of the first coat (red) starting to show, but 90% second (black) coat was the norm.

Thanks, that doesn't sound that bad for being in the water for 7 months or so and not having anyone dive on it. How big were the barnacles?

Still debating on SR40 or SR60. I talked to Pettit and they thought the SR40 would work for us for the 3-6 months in the water at a time. The SR60 is about $30 more and we need 4 gallons. $120 for more protection and less worry might be worth it,

I had Mental Floss in the water up here in Alaska from May to September. I had her bottom epoxied and then two coats of bottom paint at the beginning of the season. By the end of the season I had a very light slime on the hull. Took a long handled brush and a bucket of simple green and scrubbed her clean, rinsed off with fresh water from a hose.
