Installation help: Garhauer Rigid Vang

Post by (Sub) Ed Tordahl*PROTEUS* »

Hi folks,

I purchased the Garhauer Rigid Vang last October at a boat show. The attended at the booth informed me it was suitable for a 26X, though I got the feeling I was just being placated for the sale. Myself being quite the suspicious one at times, even though it definitely was a GARHAUR booth and not a third party. Taking a second look at their web site, it does appear to be an RV-12.

My issue is that it appears to be a bit large for the boat. When I line everything up, ensuring it is compressed somewhat, and the mast end is as low as I believe it can go (allowance for the mast pivot bolt? Is it an issue??) The boom end appears to want to attach about a foot or so AFT of the current Vang boom bail. This give a much greater angle than the near 45 Im used to seeing.

Is this correct?

To anyone who had installed one, would you mind giving me the distance measuring aft from the fwd end of the boom to the fwd end of the track.
What is the over all length of the Vang in it's nominal state?
Any help appreciated.

BTW, I had to purchase the -20 FH mounting hardware, though Ive read from you folks that it came with it. Picked up a tap kit as well.

Thanks, and fair winds to all.......

Ed,
Boat's not handy for getting you measurements, but my Garhauer is about 60/30 degrees off mast/boom.

Just received my Gerhauer yesterday. It came with only two T-strips for mounting? Not sure how the mast located one will mount in the sail track. Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Bruce

Bruce,
Consider returning one mounting track (and the vang connector) in exchange for the mast bracket. I think Garhauer offers either choice at same cost, and you've already discovered they are a great supplier to work with.

I have the twin track version like you. I don't know exactly how the dealer mounted it - could be they used wing-shaped brackets. But it seems to me that the bracket pictured below is a lot more secure. Besides, it's impractical to use the track adjustment potential on the mast track anyhow.

Whichever you choose, be careful that the mast-mount clears the centerboard guide loop when the mast is dropping. See more info about it at this mod page, and one of the pix below. You'd want to fine-tap for the eight screws.
