Mercury 60hp, how to get it up?

Post by kurz »

Hello
On my new :macm: (2011) I put the mercury 60HP Bigfoot (also new). I dit not think to much concerning 50 oder 60 HP.
But now, the mercury 60hp cannot be taken up. It is too big and the steering seat cannot be closed anymore.

How did you solve this problem? Of course you can sail with the prop down. But within this concept I'd like do it easyly.

Maybe I have fix the steering seat 5cm higher. Would not be a big problem, just will not look anymore perfect with the lines, becous of the 5cm it does not fit anymore left an right.

But I am shure many of you know about this an can tell solutions.

Thanks - kurz

Hi Kurz and Welcome to the board 8) I have a 2005 M I believe these boats to be be the same... I have and many of us here have, the 50 HP Mercury EFI Bigfoot.. The 60 HP motor is I believe, the same engine, as the 50.. My 50 fits fine.. I can can raise it up without pushing up the seat and still clear the water.. I "think" you have mounted your motor Too High..

Kurz, as Divecos says your engine may have been mounted too high on the transom. When it is in the down position, is the top cavitation plate (the large one, just above the propeller) level with the bottom of the stern? If that proves not to be the case can the engine be lowered one bolt hole (X 4)?
If you are confused with this - reply back with some pictures.....

My Suzuki (also 60hp), which is properly positioned, just barely touches the centre of the rear lower curve of the seat when I try to fully raise it. It scrapes by and then is clear. I lost a very small bit of paint on the motor cowl before I figured this out and simply lift the seat a bit until it is past this point.
It wouldn't hurt things too much to grind away the edge until clear, but for now I'm going to live with it a little longer. Also if the engine is turned to one side, or the other, it can affect where, and how much it touches.
I wouldn't resort to this until I made sure your engine mounting position is optimum. The have been several posts to this site previously concerning the best position of the outboard lower unit, for proper performance under power.

Hahahahahaha.. and that aside Mr.Rick.... :D As Crikey mentioned as well..Having that motor mounted too high will effect the boats motoring performance..

I think it is common to either cut the seat when a larger motor is installed or to let the motor remain down more.

I also have the 60 HP Bigfoot and it is mounted lowest position and will not completely come up with the seat down. I raise the seat to lower and raise the motor and when sailing, take it up to where the prop is barely in the water - that keeps it from scraping the seat. The other options seems to be raising the seat with plastic blocks - it takes about 3/4 inch to do it right. I had some made but have decided to just sail with the prop blade in the water rather than modify the seat positioning. Since I don't race, I don't think I'll ever know the difference. Bringing the seat up for lowering the motor and raising it isn't that much of a hassell.

It was good to hear that the Suzuki had a similar problem - I was kicking myself for buying the Merc. These newer engines have a higher cowling and it cannot be lowered without major mods - I took my cowling apart and gave up on that idea.

Placing the engine in it's lowest position will cost you 2-3 knts under power and increase steering effort

hello Bob
So do you think, that you even could put the merc in a lower position?
