Stove area dimensions needed

Post by canmac27 »

Hello all,

I'm looking to put in an alcohol stove in the Mac that will be picked up this spring but I'm having a hard time finding the dimensions of the area next to the sink on the galley. I'm not sure if a two burner stove can be accommodated?
Can someone let me know what the dimensions are?

P.S. Some first-hand reviews regarding alcohol stoves would also be appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help.

having had two flare up, fires from alcohol stoves in larger sail boats, I chose to go with a stainless two burner camp stove from Coleman, its propane.
Never cooked a meal on it, but have made lots of boiling water, it works great, remember the propane stove isn't to be used as a heater for the mac.

The two burner stove fits perfect on my 2004 m sink, with the lid of the stove that opens toward the side bulkhead, not the mirror.

Boat not here, so cant measure it.

I have a little Orego 1 burner alcohol stove installed by the dealer.

I thought it was a joke when I first saw it but we have since become masters at 1 pot meals. The stove works fine and I like not having gas down below. The only pots we use are a pressure cooker which doubles as frying pan, oven, wok, etc and a stove top espresso maker (invaluable!). With space in the galley being a minimum, I am not sure it's worth going bigger.

The only other cooking hardware we use is the stern mounted BBQ which gets use a lot.

I don't know the dimensions of the counter however but you could probably just email a dealer and ask it you don't get a reply here.

Hey Canmac! :D

I assume you're buying new(?) I took the sliding galley unit out of my 2011 for storage in my basement and just measured it.

The outside dimensions of the top of the entire unit is 44 X 25 X 18" high. There is a 2" high backsplash that extends 2" into the top, and a 1 1/2" rim that runs around the other 3 edges. The sink is offset to the left of centre, and the flat counter area to its right measures 17" wide by 21" deep. You might be able to squeeze something a bit larger than this into the flat area if you have to.

Hope this is helpful.

- Brian.

You can fit a two burner stove top on the counter. i am currently replacing the kitchen top and insides. I decided to put a two burner naptha stove in (coleman green monster, I prefer these to propane). There is enough space for the stove, tank, and room to adjust the second burner on the side. We used the single butane burner from BWY, but one canister of butane lasts one, two day weekend (coffee, breakfast, dinner for two for two nights). Naptha always seems to last forever, and one burner does work, but I like hot coffee with my eggs bacon and hash browns in the morning.

Yeah - I might also mention that I would suppose that you could cut the sink out and install one farther to the side if you needed more burner space. Is that what you are referring to, Bob?

Ya I put the sink to the upper left and the burners front to back on the right. Opens up more useable counter space a bigger sink and two burners.

Just a hint when using the origo stove top, don't cook for too long or the knob can get hot and burn (especially after cooking mud crabs for 2 hrs+) :( :D

Just waiting on the water pump then on goes the tile and trim. Had a local place bend up the stove box liner out of ss. It worked out in that the extra space required to operate the stove is going to work great for storing items while underway. Made the top and inch deeper and two inches longer as well.

Went with sliding doors to increase the opening without having clearance issues with the ladder.

Also plan on adding a paper towel holder off of one end and a dish towel bar along the front edge.

canmac27 I mentioned on another thread a piece of good advice from the dealer who sold me my 26M: 'don't get carried away purchasing extras for a new Mac unless you have experience with a previous one ... it is surprisingly difficult to predict which add-ons you will really find useful, and they can be added later as needed'.

The 1st mate and I have used Coleman camping stoves for decades, and continued to use a 2-burner one on the Mac. Then one day at a wharf, a guy with a larger sailboat was proudly showing me all the things he had built into it. His work was impressive and included a stainless steel steering wheel that he had made and machined himself from scratch, complete with cleverly-fitted spokes. But just as proudly he showed me a cheap little 1-burner butane stove he had picked up for aout $20: "look", he said, "small, light, clean, look how it lights with the twist of a knob, variable heat, uses these little butane bottles." I was amazed that this guy who could and would build anything would be so excited about this little stove. Then I thought of our heavy camp stove, pouring fuel into it etc ... and went out & bought a stove just like the other guy had demonstrated (made by World Famous, you can get sets of 4 butane bottles for $10 at Home Hardware) at Canadian Tire for about $25. The 1st mate and I have been delighted with it. yukonbob is correct though that a single butane bottle does not last forever, and one feels a bit guilty throwing them away afterward.

robbarnes1965 does the pressure cooker really work as an oven?!!! We have an old pressure cooker, and we occasionally find ourselves wishing we had an oven on the 26M (eg. for potlucks with other boats in isolated anchorages). I'm excited about this plan!
