Leak in aft cockpit
I have a leak in the aft cockpit of my 2011 26M allowing water to get into the aft sleeping area a few drops at a time - presumably from the pedestal bolts or the wire / cable pass through tube. Has anyone else had this problem?
If the bolts are removed from the angle brackets on the pedestal, can it be rotated forward or aft enough to get sealant around the pass through tube?

Re: Leak in aft cockpit
Dribbles into the aft berths is a VERY common problem with all Macs.
Sources can indeed be those bolts that secure the binnacle to the cockpit sole. However, the more likely sources are water running down the control cables at the binnacle, or entering via the steering rod pass-through in the transom, or through the control cable pass-through at the transom.
And yes, if you remove two you can usually lift it enough to apply sealant, but you'll want to make sure the mating surfaces are very clean before you apply the sealant.

I guess and caulk every spring.
If you can pinpoint your first leak on your 26M correctly the first time I think we should give you an award.
Captain Tolley creeping crack cure works wonders in minutes on my leaky windows .

On boats
Capt. Tolley was originally invented for boats so it’s no surprise that it excels in this area. It’s very effective for fixing leaking windows, porthole surrounds, portlights, decks, coach roofs and centreboard casings. And it’s ideal for sealing around stressed items such as deck fittings.

Lets keep this clean eh , but I can't help adding that most dribbles in the aft or V berth are usually the captain's fault, start in the cockpit and can't be sealed by Captain Tolley's creeping crack cure.kmclemore wrote:Dribbles into the aft berths is a VERY common problem with all Macs.

Re: Leak in aft cockpit
WIth 2 young kids, there are no such leaks on my boat, Lucky thing too, because my caulking gun nozzle has glugged up
Actually, with two young kids, there are indeed leaks, but I have found those cheapo waterproof picnic rugs to make great matress covers in the Mac.
Sorry, PS, you probaby expected more help from the guys on this site. I must be one of the lucky ones as with a 2007 built boat, I still have no leaks at all, even in the worst of downpours as experienced in the last week, I get no water in there.
Perhaps you could block the cockpit drain area up and pour some water in, to see if that is where your leak is happening?

If you're doin' it right, you don't NEED the lubricant.Québec 1 wrote:I think he meant

I'm sorry, you are not getting much help here PS, but I can tell you that all is not lost, as by the way things are going, a picture of Peaches will no doubt soon appear
But seriously, hopefully someone will be along soon to detail the process of how they worked out where the leak was coming from

Re: Leak in aft cockpit
Zero leaks on my 2011 even in an extremely heavy, week-long rain period (unusual here in S.D.) Was very happy when I inspected the boat after the rain--except all the black soot everywhere from the dried dirty rain.

Q1 what do you polish? Your boat with, she looks stunning in all your pics. How much time is involved?

I now carry a bottle of 3m marine combination rubbing compound and wax for highly oxidized hulls with me at all times. When ever I see a spot which is crudy or scratched I take ten minutes and rub this on with a micro cloth and my hull comes up shinny again. It takes 2 days or approx 10 hours to do the complete boat in the spring and 1 day to bring it back up in the fall. I'm not counting the work on the real scratches which I wet sand by hand with high quality 600 and 1000 grit sandpaper followed by rubbing compound, glaze and wax every spring. This year I will be trying liquid wax instead of the fleetwax.

Q1
1. I wash the boat with 3m boat cleaner
2. I deoxidize and remove all the small scratches and crud with 3m compound
3. I apply the Macquires 2nd step glaze
4. I apply the Collinite wax

Re: Leak in aft cockpit
2005 M have leaks?? As Kevin described.. Transom at the cable and control arm ingress egress.. Only when in big following seas or tied to the dock / slip.. and some knucklehead thinks he has special permission to ignore the No Wake .. signs.. There are some sexy Rubber boots for those 2 areas and I am sure I will regret that terminology hahahaha
