sail slide with the M

Post by kurz »

hello
I put sails slide to the main.

How did you close the insertion in the mast? It is quite higher at the :macm: than at the :macx:

I guess I will put a sheet of iron to cover. But I am sure that here are many good ideas already.

Thanks - kurz

Kurz,

Can you post a photo of where you have located the sail track stop?

The "stop" should be tightened just above the opening in the mast where you insert it. When you lower the "main", all of the slugs should slide down to just above the enlarged opening in the track.

The sail stop is pretty useless and results in the problems you have noted. Blue Water Yachts sells a sail gate that will solve you problems.

Love mine.

Thanks - just like this I thought it has to be.
One question: What kind of screw did you use? Did you tap a thread? Or did you put a rivet with a thread inside first?

Thanks!

Hey kurz! :D
Drilled and tapped. Plenty of meat in the mast wall thickness for 10-32 (1/2" long I think) stainless steel screws. You can confirm this by looking at the end of the mast extrusion, no threaded insert required. Locate the holes so they don't interfere with the channel in the mast.

Because they were readily available, I used the cursed Philips head screws  from the stone age , which should logically not exist (but that's a story for another time, don't get me started :x ). Unfortunately I could not find the same in Robertson head screws, which would be more appropriate for this (or just about any other) job.

In order to use material easy to work with, and readily available at hand (and I think there's a lot of aluminum siding and trim to be found literally blowing around the country right now) I suggested aluminum siding, if that's all you can get, which can be doubled back on itself for strength. Quick and dirty, and you can cut it with scissors or a razor knife. A piece of plastic heated to the curvature would work as well. Whatever you have on hand.

Their online catalog leaves a lot to be desired. Give them a call, they will know exactly what you are looking for.

Unless you want to fabricate one! :)

There have been some suggested solutions to this problem that work on an "S" and "X" that don't work on an "M". It was good to start a dedicated "M" thread separate from the others. But I also see some suggestions made for the "M" that won't work on (later models that I know of) an "M". Is it possible that the mast cutout on the later "M"s is not present on the earlier"M"s? Or is smaller, or lower?

For those of you who have not done so yet, it would be helpfull if the model year were listed on your profiles, for this among other reasons. (Thanks!)

Hey Q1! What you suggested (sail stop won't solve the issue for me, or for some others here. Did that solve it for you? Is your mast cutout smaller and closer to the boom maybe?
