Main Halyard to cockpit

Post by kurz »

Hello
How did you bring your main halyard to the cockpit with your :macm: ?

Where did you put the block so the mast still can turn?

thanks - kurz

Kurz,

A couple of different methods but on my boat I have a block through bolted to the deck just to the starboard side of the mast. Then I have a turning block mounted on top of the hatch track abeam the mast. And then I have an arrangement of cleats up at the front starboard side of the cockpit to secure the halyard.

You can take open up that area above the forward dinette seat and pull out the foam and get access to the underside of the deck next to the mast. Very easy to do. And then you can use bolts/nuts/washers/backing plate for your turning blocks.

I actually have "double blocks" because my halyard also works as a "haul down" if I pull it the other way. One end is tied to the head board just like a normal halyard...led through the blocks I described back to the cockpit...then it turns back on itself and is led through the second set of blocks and is tied around the top most sail slug. I use this to pull the main down into the lazy jacks. Works great for me and definitely makes single-handing much easier.

Cheers,
Jim

I have a Harken 140 (swivel block with cam cleat), mounted on the base of the mast on my M. I also use the "loop" halyard like C130 Jim's described in the previous post and elsewhere. There are many posts here about your question, just use the search function.

harken block doubled up on the factory block

I drilled a new hole in the mast holder, but you can use the hole for the mast raiser if you want

led back to a new cleat

I use a Harken 140 http://www.harkenstore.com/uniface.urd/ ... MEB9Y8VCTC attached to the mast a few inches up from the step. This works well for me. I found it difficult to get the sail to feed into the track without intervention so I also added a Spinlock Sail Feeder. https://www.spinlock.co.uk/en-US/hardwa ... uff-feeder Worth every penny. Sail feeds effortlessly into the track from the cockpit.

Adding to the dittos: I used a harken 140 shackled to the mast raiser hole, and put a swivel block on the cabin-top track. Took more time to thread the halyard than to install the hardware and it works just fine. A spinlock sail feeder is an absolute must. I've not rigged a downhaul.

Is the sail feeder for roped luffs? I have slugs on my luff.

Yes, it's for rope luffs. With a sail feeder, the rope luff is nearly as easy to haul up as a sail with slugs.

I also use the Harken 140 mounted to the mast - works great. The thing I have yet to master is where to attach the haul down on the sail to get an easy haul down. The slugs bock no matter what position I use but the turning block is mounted to the rear hole on the mast mount - could be the problem. Thinking about moving the turning block to the mounting plate for the vang which I do not use so I can get a vertical haul down position. Any suggestions?
