If in doubt ?

Post by padge »

During my pre season servicing of my outboard I spotted some corrosion on one of the control wires , the sheathing was exposed and looked a bit rusty.
It has been like this since I aquired my Mac in june so I just gave it a squirt of lube and Thought this is normal and It will be alright .

On Tuesday I tried to go for a little sail . The wind was against me and I needed to do a 3 point turn exiting the marina and as I selected reverse nothing happened ,Stuck in forward :-(

I gently came to rest against the other side of the marina , NO damage .

I was towed back to my berth by the local tug at no cost ,(thanks Dinger I owe you a beer)

Looking at the cable the outer had completely seperated and the inner was bending when reverse was selected.

The cable were original 5 years - This seems a common problem & The replacement cables were not difficult to fit .
I went for the quality bendy cable only an extra £4 each - worth it!

So the moral of the story is - If in doubt CHANGE THEM !
