I think if I had to give it a name, I'd call it a "Graboid." Like on the movie "Tremors."The Stainless bar installed in front on the pedestal....we always called it the grab bar

I can see a 'grab bar' but who the heck wants a ball busting "table" out there in the cockpit. You got your table below that takes up enough space, until you lower it for a peaceful summer night's slumber.
Bumps and waves, hold on to your plastic cups in the cockpit, and if you're busy, stick it between your thighs and squeeze and hope for the best.

the table in the pic Mark Prouty posted .... that identical bar and table costs about 250 without the fold-out leaves ... same screw pattern on the center table and all ... seems enough without the leaves ... plus there is available a real functional cup holder of stainless rod, holds the standard can-in-foam cooler, that works BOTH WAYS when the table is folded down or up horizontal ... ingeniously simple, effective, and minimal ... mounts at the top end of the table close to the pedestal front ... looks like it belongs to the boat, unlike lots of aftermarket stuff that looks out of place on the Mac.

It folds up and stows flat against the forward portion of the pedestal. It only opens up in the cockpit when desired. I have a small one (w/o the leaves) that I don't even notice.Sloop John B wrote:I can see a 'grab bar' but who the heck wants a ball busting "table" out there in the cockpit. We're looking at making something that will fold up. The M has that narrow post that holds up the pedestal. A fold down table would get kicked too much. We may use plexiglass. It's expensive but we already have a piece. I wonder if a piece of cutting board plastic from any store would also work. We haven't decided whether or not to have wings. It folds up and stows flat against the forward portion of the pedestal. It only opens up in the cockpit when desired. Table for M
I've pondered a table arrangement for my M cockpit on and off. The M cockpit is narrower than the X, and the pedestal console does not go to the floor like the X one does, so I don't think any kind of table mounted to the front of the pedestal would be of use to me. Some sort of table would be nice, though.
I think I have settled on something that mounts either in the companionway, or on the trailing edge of the sliding top hatch. That area in the M is where the traveler is, so is not a useful seating surface; a table mounted above the traveler would be good use of space. It would be simple to attach a table to a trapezoidal piece of plywood or starboard that would slide into the tracks where the cabin door goes, but that would block the entrance to the cabin. That's why I was comtemplating something attached to the sliding hatch - it could slide with the hatch to allow access into the cabin - as long as you don't slide the hatch too vigorously and dump anything on the table.
Something might even be riggable where the table folds under and is stored on the inside bottom of the sliding hatch (I've seen some boats store their hatchboards like this).
Any other M owners thinking along these lines?

I have the grab bar that mounts to the floor and has the fold up table. I think I've used the table once or twice. The bar I grab onto all the time. I like that it mounts to the floor as it feels more solid and stable. I could have done without the table.
What I noticed in looking for ways to attach instruments to it is that although a grab bar is common on sail boats and readily available, the Mac is too narrow for the standard with (I think I measured mine at 10") so anything made to mount to them is too big. Cnsequentlly I think that the only place you will find one is someplace Mac related.
If I had an M I think I would do without as it would partly defeat the purpose of the narrower post pedestal.

I have a 2005 M and have been thinking of getting a perdistal crutch tube holder from the early M and installing it into the pedestal top. I would modify it so it just goes through the pedestal box. I could then make a table that slots into this. I saw a fellow do this with an X and used it for his stove and BBQ; worked great. This is a maybe since I just sold my X and got the boat.

Here is a picture of the cockpit table and grab bar that I have (not from my boat, but it is the same). Like Dave I have rarely used the table, but use the grab bar a lot, and it has an attachment for the mainsheet. It is sturdy. The table seems to be made of the same HDPE like a cutting board. There is a hole in the horizontal bar where the table rotates around at the attachment in which a quick pin is placed to hold the table up or down. The list price from Havencraft parts (not sure they still do biz- this is where I believe PO got the table)- was $175.
I may buy some HDPE and add leaves to the table at some point- but that is very far down on my mods to do list.
